Victoria Wood was talented.....made me smile rather than laugh but she deserved the plaudits.

Joan Rivers was funny but she carried on too long.

Oops...looks like I just busted the thread title.

There's no Asian people either and they outweigh women in number as a world demographic. I've no idea who 6-10 are though.

She should try being in funny, instead of being so crass that she got fired. It must be hard to claim to be a comedian when an entire family of cartoon namesakes is better at it than you.

Katherine Ryan is quality. Easily in my own top 10 of current comics.

Check your sums on global demographics and you will find you are way out.women are 50% of people on the planet INCLUDING Asians..

Although about as funny as a SARS outbreak on a children's ward I'd take a matinee performance of Brand, Milican, Mel and Sue over even the opening music of Mrs Brown's boys or god forbid, Eddie Izzard.
I'd take a shotgun to the sack over the latter.

Huge generalisation coming here but, I think part of the reason that women are less popular as comedians is that, given the PC nature of comedy these days, most of the humour tends be about real life and the comedian's slant on everyday activities and attitudes.

Whilst men tend more to cover commonplace things that both a male and female audience can relate to and see the humour in, the female comedians tend to lean more to women's aspects of life - which since most of you men say you find us unfathomable at the best of times, possibly accounts for why you find them less funny (excepting Miranda whom everyone seems find s***).

In truth I think the real reasons why there are less female comedians and of those that knock about are of lesser quality is the same reasons there are less female chess champions.

The nature of stand up just doesn't interest women in the same numbers as it does men....Well actually the bell curve may be a better explanation for chess but nevertheless I'll forge ahead.

Stand up requires 'stand up in front of a crowd and be judged' confidence and is competitive, and while there are certainly women who can do that the numbers are less......Women are also judged more harshly on their looks (quite rightly too!) and that's affects some of them.

So men have that much larger pool of talent for us to find the gems from.

Also like Hitchens implies, men have that biological imperative....which women obviously have as well, but in general the imperatives tend to go in different directions and interests.

Just had another thought about the list, if I am right, this would have been a better line of attack from Kathy Griffin.

How do Forbes define a comedian?

Ellen Degeneres has a hugely successful day time chat show. Is she not comedienne?. I can think of a number of comedy actresses who are hugely successful at the moment e.g. Kaley Cuoco, Julia Louis Dreyfus. Have they been included in the list or discounted?

Do you have to do stand up to be counted?

The issue maybe with how Forbes puts the list together. Just a thought.
