Your posts are fun, but come on, Fantasy Football is not real management.

Listing a bunch of statistically good players, and estimating (not real) prices is very different from actually being able to be of use to a football club.

Management staff have to identify potential, persuade and convince bosses, teams, agents and players. They need to be able to successfully sign players in the face of worldwide competition. Work with their agents, hash out fees, salaries, bonuses, work visas. And work with the selling team, and convincing the team and player Palace is the best choice is a whole different ball game than list-making. Not to mention working within a limited budget and juggling possible offers and scenarios, including being used as bait to jack-up prices or contract renewals, or getting scooped by bigger teams who are happy to take advantage of your scouting leg-work.

Not to mention balancing the salary costs, the amortization within Prem rules and financial fair play, home grown rules, staggering contract costs, etc.

Managing teams (or any big business for that matter) is different from picking stocks, it's much much more complicated than just picking companies you think will increase in value (and conveniently forgetting about the losers).

You seem to say you are never wrong about talent assessment, but each window you list about 100 potential players and then crow about the 5 that actually went on to success.

Please carry on, I do enjoy the lists, but if you are serious about thinking you'd be a world class scout (or Manager?), then I just don't know what to say, but good luck.

You should be aware that I've always taken that into consideration, but the Premier League salaries are at such a higher level than the ones from the rest of Europe that any dedication a player might have for his current club pales in comparison to having an offer from the PL and a salary which can ensure him and his family a long and happy life.

Managing teams (or any big business for that matter) is different from picking stocks, it's much much more complicated than just picking companies you think will increase in value.

I am aware of that. I know more about this game than anyone who currently manages players. I know everything about how their growth and development happens in a club, from particularities at certain youth ages to how training should be done and how to ensure development for long periods of time in their careers. Sure, the managers are a key component and the environmemt at the club with the facilities the management creates are equally important, but the basis is selection, especially at the highest level.

You can say it is not that important at junior and youth level cause 12 year olds may lose or gain advantages in time, but when you're already playing in one of the best competitions in the world, the Premier League, it's selection that makes you climb higher. You need to see the broad picture, not just for a season. Ask yourself: how did the big clubs get to be big? Obviously, there's a status-quo that is very difficult to lose when you get to the top and Man Utd and Liverpool have always been powerhouses, but some who had been in the top did go down too if they weren't careful (Leeds for example, Champions League semifinalists, now in the 2nd division).

Also, some have moved up. Why is it top 6 now? It used to be Man Utd and Arsenal 20 years ago. Then it was United, Araenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (top 4). Then it became top 6. Of course, Chelsea and City had powerful sponshorship, Liverpool had its legacy. But Tottenham? They're top 10 in the world right now. And you know how? Bale did a lot of difference. A player who allowed them to get 100 million to keep the wheels rolling. After him came to Tottenham world class players who otherwise would not have come. Some were successes: Ericksen, Son Min Heon, Lamela and some where more modest or didn't stay long: Chadli, Capoue, Paulinho. But they weren't bad, they were players who incresead the level. English youth talent was attracted (Dele Alli) or stayed at the club (Kane). Today Tottenham is definitely up there withthe other clubs mentioned above. Could you imagine that for Palace in the next 10 years? I can and there is a certain road to follow to get there.

Let me tell you a little story of a German club called Borussia Moenchengladbach. Great history behind it, but in the last 20 years up until 2011 it had remained a mediocre team in Germany. A young 18 year old by the name of Marco Reus had been bought in 2009 from Rott Weiss for 1 million after scoring 4 and assisting 3 in his first 2.Bundesliga season after coming through the youth ranks with good results. He scored 8 and assisted 4 in his 1st Borussia Moenchengladbach season, scored 10 and assisted 8 in his 2nd and in the 2011/12 season he scored 18 and asisted 13 as Moenchengladbach finished 4th and got a Champions League position. It was innevitable for him to go and Dortmund bought him for 16 million (at that time it was a pretty good sum). And what did this open the door for? How did they invest? They have since brought Granit Xhaka for 7 million, Raffael for 4.5, Thorgan Hazard and Jonas Hoffman for 7 each (both are best assisters in the Bundesliga this year) and some other players to keep that position up there, because they didn't want to drop into the mid-table mediocrity again.

And they succeeded, they managed to replace Reus with other players who kept them up, finished a lot in the top 4 and played 3-4 times in the Champions League (which made them even more money). At the start of this season they made their biggest investmment convincing Alhassane Plea, Nice striker and Champions League player, to come to them. Why did he? Because by now Borussia Moenchengladbach has become a name. They did spend some money on him, it's true, 20 million, but he has come good: 12 goals and 3 assists for him so far this season.

This was the team which only paid 2-3 million at the most for players before selling Marco Reus and becoming a powerhouse player. That decision made by someone in the club: to pay 1 million on that 18 year old kid who would later become one of the most appreciated football players in the world, that decision changed the club's destiny. Just like getting Bale changed Tottenham's destiny, just like having Zaha coming through the youth ranks changed Palace's destiny.

If there had been no Zaha, the team would have been in the Championship now. Zaha brought Palace money through his United transfer, money through the promotion, money through keeping the team up in the PL and will bring more money with another transfer. If he had not existed you could not have talked of good management at the club. It's decisions that seem little that make waves and have big repercusions and change the destiny of teams.

You seem to say you are never wrong about talent assessment, but each window you list about 100 potential players and then crow about the 5 that actually went on to success.

I list a lot of players and ALL of whom I listed have made progress in their careers and pretty much doubled their value in the last 3 years. And I have also been right about players who I said were not for the Premier League. Look now where are Ozil, Gabbiadini, Balotelli[. These are players on which other managements (which you say are more intelligent than me) have decided to pay dozens of millions on. But forget about these players everybody knows, check out my obscure players lists. I named 200 players from the Netherland and from Belgium and Switzerland and I was right about all of them and what they did in the next seasons. It's kind of hard to use a search option on this site, but you can find it if you search, it's all there. Like this one:

I just know what a player is going to do long-term. It's a gift. /b]

I'm pretty sure that if Matteo had potential as a scout he would of been snapped up by now... It's amazing what Google can do...

You don't get snapped cause there is no one to snap you, neither do you "apply" for a scouting company. You work as a scout if you were friends in youth football with the current President or Manager at a club. You can create your own company if your rich daddy gives you enough money to create it.

I am in neither situation of the above, so there is no way I could enter into the football business. Let alone in the big money Premier League one. They don't recruit you if you're highly professional and well trained, it's all about relations and connections. They all think they know about football players ))

Well, there are a lot of people who think they are brilliant their field but the world won't give them a chance.

You certainly do a lot of research on players, so chase your dream, start with a non-league club and try to get into the business, that is how people chase careers. Starting at the bottom, proving themselves and earning their way up. In my field, I've certainly helped keen, smart people get a foot in the door and get their career started.

But I suspect that ego might be a significant obstacle for you. I can't imagine hiring someone in my field who was certain they had a research gift and were 100% correct in every one of their assessments.

But if your predictions are as foolproof as you say, then I imagine you are already a Fantasy Football millionaire. Certainly you should be placing bets on career development of players if your analysis is always right, there are lots of ways to do that. And you'll make a lot more money than as a scout.

You dig the lad out by talking about the complexities of transfer negotiations when the highest wages to revenue ratio in the league and history of substandard signings (Jach, Rakip, Sorloth etc.) demonstrates that cpfc probably aren't putting in a tenth of the research Matteo is!

And what do we think about Maupay? At £15m I think he is probably worth it, at £20m I think it’s getting a bit pricey.

Academic as far as Palace are concerned - there will be nothing like that spent in this window

Given the rumours and what appears to be our search for a loan rather than a purchase any interest in Maupay seems highly improbable.

matteo, I like others enjoy your in-depth research as a form of distraction, but your level of certainty can be a bit tiresome. I was curious if you had commented on any of our previous signings and here's what you wrote when we signed Sorloth:

"He's the real deal for a 22 year old player. He's not gonna storm the PL, but he'll develop nicely over the years. He has not only played well in Denmark, but also in Norway at just 19."

You're right that he didn't storm the PL, but not so sure anyone would call him the real deal after his first 12 months. This is the danger of judging someone who looks great in an inferior league and probably why Palace will turn to someone with experience in a top league if they sign a striker this winter. There are players like Sala in France who we could probably get at a reasonable price, but when you look at the defences they're up against they give them so much time and space it is not comparable. Personally I hope you do get some kind of scouting job as you clearly enjoy it.
