I agree, we've got involved over the years introducing Western religon and culture, without recognising tribal and local beliefs, customs etc dating back millennia. And not just Africa.

Well, everyone was doing it....Africa was lucky it was the British and not Belgium or the Germans who had the biggest slice .....However, while it was of its time I don't think we can say that imperialism is the kind of cultural interaction that ultimately is good for anyone. Still, it plainly has nothing to do with Africa's governance. Africa was run far better by the Europeans....but we had no right to run it. Still, everything has a positive and a negative. It's like the Romans over here......Monty Python got it right with the 'what did they ever do for us' sketch. [Link] But was it right? Of course not. In the long run all it does is create resentment. Please be careful not to mention this to the Afrikaans as they are only too ready to remind you that it was the British that invented the concentration camp to subdue the Boers, murdering many thousands in the process. And don't dare mention the scorched earth policy.

Unfortunately, many deaths did occur due to poor facilities and corruption. A far cry from Nazi death camps just to be clear here. Also these camps were investigated and shut down by British authorities after a British public outcry. I am not condoning British methods of that time, merely trying to add balance. I understand, one of my best mates is a Boer and we have great banter over such things. Usually we argue about rugby though. I find he is quick to get angry but it doesn't really bother me. I can be very argumentative myself - as my missus continuously points out. It's kind of ironic how Britain treated the Boers but then essentially left them in charge.
