I hate this expression with a passion... If it was easy enough to just 'man up' then we wouldn't have any mental health issues in the world and wouldn't have such a high suicide rate amongst men.

Yes he's a sour faced guy who comes across miserable.. But so bloody what.. Let's remember he had to hide under a table at the Dunblane school massacre whilst Thomas Hamilton shot and killed 16 children... Who knows what effect that has had on him??

He's still the finest tennis player Britain has produced and deserves respect for what he has achieved.

If Dunblane had that much of an effect on him he wouldn’t be able to play tennis. He’s a naturally dour man. It’s his default tone and it stays monotone. He isn’t depressed, or wasn’t during his career. He’s just not very charismatic, probably knows it and it comes through in his speech. The one time he showed any charisma was when he was in the audience on ‘Mock The Week.’

A very good career but this was always possible with the way he pounds round the court having to play at 100% all the time to stand a chance.

Totally agree. The world has gone soft. For him to think it's ok to call a press conference to cry in front of the whole world shows what a state we're in.

I love the phrase 'man up' and think it's underused. When he told his old dear he was going to do this she should have told him to get a grip and man up. Saves him the mental trauma of the future embarrassment of his kids having to watch their old man behave like a man child on telly. Captured forever.

A lot of mental health issues could be nipped in the bud by being told to get a grip rather than validate 'feelings'.

Wow... I have no words..

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

I wasn't saying he is depressed.. I was just saying what happened may of contributed to why he is as he is.
I do know he has always s*** down reporters very quickly whenever he has been asked about what happened that day.. I'm pretty sure it's something you would never forget

His almost single handed winning of the Davis Cup will always be remembered as a legendary sporting achievement, when up until then we were considered a joke of a Tennis nation

As far as I'm concerned he's Scottish and I'm English. Therefore he's not 1 of our own.

When I saw the title, assumed he’d died.
Bit disappointed he has only retired.
I am, of course, joking

I can understand his emotion. Just imagine how upset we would be if Wilf announced he was having to hang up him boot at the prime of his career. Cut him some slack.

I quite like Andy Murray. There's no celebrity posturing around him - just seems like a normal guy who is very good at tennis.

It's only about 10 years ago that the likelihood of me living to see a British Grand Slam winner seemed very slim. What he has achieved is excellent - okay he may not be up there with the "greats" of the game, but he has succeeded where no other Brits have done before
(apologies to Fred Perry, but the sport was very different in his day).

Great, that makes me feel a whole lot better. Did you qualify in clinical psychology, psychiatry or both?

Or maybe you are one of those that thinks specialists are over-rated and would quite happily perform your own aortal by-pass.

There will be many people on this site, possibly the majority, affected by mental health issues. Your statement is unthinking, uncaring and inappropriate.
