Realistically Hodgson is not going to leave this season and it’s most unlikely he will change his ways so we have to accept more of the same going forward I.e a lack of tactical flexibility and a rigid conservatism.
There is no doubt that his approach has made a significant contribution to our appalling home record and lack of goals.
Even if we get new players in I think he will be most unlikely to involve them for a while and, if they are not his choices, even use them at all.
In fairness we always look organised and competitive but we should
pose more of a threat going forward with the players at our disposal.
Yesterday, after Watford went ahead, I never fancied our chances of getting anything out of the game which is bad as there was plenty of time left.
Why not try Zaha down the right for a spell in the game or allow the midfielders to break forward into the penalty area more frequently?
Wan Bissaka hit some good low crosses yesterday but we never looked like getting on the end of them.

I agree with most of your assessment here. The issue for me is that he does not try or doing anything other than what he does week in week out. I also agree with Roys track record around utilising players available to him I would not be confident he would not leave them on the bench anyway for a significant period of time.

Big old chunk of hindsight in this post.

I thought Kouyate had a really good game yesterday, him and Luka are a solid central midfield partnership. He does a lot of the unglamarous work and many times filled in for AWB at right back to allow him to bomb forward. I'm a fan of Meyer (and I suspect he would have come on had one of the subs having to be used for the goalkeeper) but do you think he would have stood a chance for 90 mins against their physical team?

Ayew started because he has scored in his last 2 games for palace. We would be questioning the sanity of any manager had he then been dropped for a Wickham or a partially fit Benteke. That said, Benteke did give us a totally new dimension and whilst his record over the last couple of years isn't great I'm sure he will be starting once he is fit.

It's always a gutting one to lose when you have the lead and end up losing the game, but Watford are a really strong mid-table team.

I agree with the above. Watford are very physical and I thought Kouyate does a really important defensive job for us in those circumstances. Watford were definitely a cut above most of the mid and lower table teams we have played this season. But its fine margins - they have six points from our two games but there is very little between us. And much as we all dislike Deeney...what a shift he puts in, puts out strikers to shame quite frankly.

Good points. Need to be set up to be a lot more attack minded in home games. Roy might be worried at how slow we start in the games, then he needs to pump up the players and get them switched on pre match. We look like we are trying to sneak wins.

Our home record over the last few years is pretty appalling. Before Roy's arrival.

It's all very well saying set the team up to be more attack minded, however I think we are more effective playing football on the break. But then the fans expect the home team to be forcing the issue - and we then struggle to unlock defences.

I was as upset as anyone at the final whistle yesterday because having got away with a slow start and ahead through a lucky goal, we failed to get a second despite having all the chances in the first 15-20 minutes of the second half. If we had scored in that time, I think we would have won the game.

Hodgson has had to contend with a lack of both quality and quantity in the forward positions from day one. Things may improve if/when Wickham and Benteke are fully fit, but let's not forget that Wickham is not a prolific goalscorer and Benteke may have been once, but it remains to be seen if he can ever recapture that sort of form.

Yes, Roy has his faults, but I think there are mitigating circumstances behind his record this season.

If he does go at the end of the season then some of you will have got your wish. And you can see what managerial masterstroke Steve Parish comes up with this time.

Yeah, good question that. In any event, the only occassions that our club listens to supporters is when the HF want something; if they tell Parish to jump he just asks "how high?"

First he says he won’t jump.

Then a rumour surfaces that he might jump.

There is a lack of official communication about the jumping question.

Then he does a 180 and says he will jump after all.

I don’t think SP has any intention of getting rid of RH this season, but if we are in the relegation places at the end of February or let’s say after the Brighton home game on 9 March, he’ll have to act then surely. There will then be just eight games left to get us out of trouble and, if we are in that situation, RH clearly isn’t the man to do it.

The problem is who would we get in to take over? I was disappointed that Hasenhüttl went to Southampton. I wouldn’t have minded him here. The Saints will get out of trouble easily. Five out of their next six league games are very winnable (and I’m including their game against us unfortunately).

Agree. We are not a side whose philosophy involves a lot of possession, we are a team that likes to break.

It appeared in Max Meyer we might have a player who can unlock a resolute defense but Hodgson still doesn’t fancy him in home games vs the likes of Watford.

Speaking of one of those masterstrokes, this is why FDB didn’t quite work out.

Wickham and Benteke are pretty goal shy, but at least they can defend set pieces a lot better than someone like Ayew. Benteke is a beast in the air in our box defensively. Having shipped 2 goals from set pieces we might think about that.

Roy showed his hand with giving tekkers time and not Wickham. Benteke will be starting soon here.

My bad. Thought it was well - established that Newcastle fans brought trouble on themselves with their over-inflated view of where their club ought to be...it was a problem long before Mike Ashley took over.
Ever since Keegan's first stint they have assumed it was their destiny to win the league and challenge in Europe.
This led to them hiring and firing managers in quick succession...some poor ones and some capable ones. Sounness, for example, was a solid middle of the table Premiership manager, but they wanted more.
However, the comparison between NUFC getting rid of Bobby Robson and talk of Palace sacking Hodgson is all the more pertinent...an old head managing the club he supported as a boy. Post Robson, NU have been a yoyo club at best...the very thing it's taken Palace 30 years to throw off.

Few here would disagree that Pardew was retained longer than he merited. Some might argue the same for Frank da Dutchman! But the suggestion that Hodgson needs to go is more akin to firing Bobby Robson (and regretting it for a long time afterwards)

On the basis of recent home games where we created 30 chances plus a game and converted barely any, it's right to argue that all that is needed is a goalscorer. (Isn't that every club's biggest need - hence the over - pricing of decent centre forwards?)
The irony of that is that the Leicester home game was awful...barely a scoring chance for either side; and yet Luca bags a 25 yarder and most of us go home happy.)

I would rather Roy were at the helm than Holloway, Pulis, Pardew, FDB and N Warnock (for whom I retain a great fondness). I'm not quite sure who the ideal Palace manager is and even if does he exists, would he come?

I’m no fan of Pulis but would argue that he did a better job than Hodgson is doing this season (as opposed to last season).
If you define good management as maximising the efficiency of available resources It is difficult to argue against the job that Pulis did with the squad at that time.
My main gripe with Hodgson is that he is not getting the best out of his squad and it’s too simplistic to say that it’s just the absence of a goalscorer.
We didn’t have a goalscorer last season but managed to play entertaining football and win games, in particular at the end of the season.
We’re not playing with the same pace and purpose in the final third as we did back then and the passing is much sloppier.
By all means the players have to take some responsibility for this but the buck stops with the manager and he has to also be accountable for the drop in standards.
The home form and lack of goals is that of a relegation candidate and although some will point to the absence of RLC and Cabaye this season, it’s up to Hodgson to find an effective way of playing with the available players.

But this is almost a definition of short - termism!

The most bizarre thing about the last 7 years is that we have gone up and stayed up with an average of one manager a year. Every measure of common sense would suggest that this is unsustainable.

I'm not sure that apart from when Murray, Wilf and Bolassie were terrorising champiionship teams we have ever created 30 plus chances in home games. Woeful finishing is making Roy's work look sub - par. Yesterday's game should have been put to bed long before Watford's comeback.
