Apart from everything else if and when all the dealings start ,the season will be upon us , and pre season done. . We could be starting with 4 new players who we not integrated into our style of play ! Not ideal .

I'd struggle to find any logic in this deal.

It's probably the one area of the squad which has comparable strength in depth. Considering we usually opt for a kind of central 3 with the left sided midfielder coming narrow. We already have 6 players who are somewhat interchangeable in those areas.

Meyer/Luka/MacArthur
Schlupp/Riedewald/Kouyate

Plus the two youngsters who seem closest to breaking into the first team squad Kirby and Dreher (though I don't think they're that close).

If for whatever reason we're in for McCarthy bearing in mind his injury record, lack of recent appearances and contract expiry I'd have started the bid at 2m going to a max of 3m on appearances, which still feels like we'd be doing them a favour.

Your head does start to wonder what the hell is going on when you read such random transfer targets like this. The best reason my wild imagination could come up with was it's to cover MacArthur who'll go to Rangers as part of a deal for Morelos! (but even then I wouldn't say we needed McCarthy). On the negative if it's a replacement for Luka then that's just about as depressing transfer that I can think of. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

After 3 successive pre-season defeats and no strong promise of goals from our strike force, we shall start the season without the benefits of early signings being blended into a coherent squad. I feel sorry for Roy and Ray who will have to work fast on ANY new signings (on the assumption we get some!)

I simply do not understand why SP has to do 'deadline/cliff-edge' deals at the last moment. This creates slow starts to a new season, poor self-confidence, relegation fears and fan disapproval. We then spend two-thirds of the season re-building and this is simply not fair on the coaching team. We are all very supportive of what SP has brought to the club but has to sort out the ownership, bring in new funds, re-build confidence, a new stand and make Palace GREAT again.

Can't wait to lose the first 8 games and still get Europa League

Remind me when we used to be GREAT.

Let's just hope and pray these rumours are false, surely RH or SP wouldn't allow such a waste of money again!!

He’s been in the map for Palace for a couple of years so it hasn’t come out of the blue? Makes more sense as back up for either McArt(ur or Luke, but a lot of dosh to spend on a back up? Can’t see him starting ahead of Luke or McArthur but we would have a very good squad player for not a huge outlay?

We need more central midfielders. Ideally 10 of them. The fishmongers has some unsold crabs from yesterday. Roy would probably like them as well.

Only if it's benefishell to the team

If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong

I don't think this is such a bad idea, we have five first team midfielders but only one you would hang your hat on: Luka. The others are a bit flaky one way or another, we need someone in mid who can convert defence into attack by carrying the ball effectively or releasing it quickly and creatively, that's McCarthy's role and he is a talented player, but the issue of flakiness is raised again due to his injury record, they don't all have to be marquee signings if they fit the particular gap we have in the team, you might not rave about players like Tom Cleverly but they can make a disproportionate difference if they're adding what's missing, that's why Serri from Fulham is interesting. We need both more solidity AND more creativity in midfield, McCarthy could potentially help to provide some of both, how much and how consistently is uncertain though
