I was quite happy to accept the concept that society should be colour blind and always strive for integration.

Then just in these recent years I woke up to what's actually going on.

It's not about being colour blind and judging people on their merits like King use to say.....It's about identity politics for non white groups.

Positive Identity for me...but negative identity for thee.

Tempted to stay out of this, as everyone is entitled to an opinion, but for what it is worth...

The existence of something (a museum celebrating black cultural history), doesn't mean it is in direct opposition to something else (white culture?)

The position 'why can't whites have one too?' misses the point. Live in the UK? Want to see white cultural history? - check out the V&A/British museum/Design museum etc. 'White' culture is pervasive and widely celebrated throughout our land already.

Suggesting that a culture that has historically been exploited and marginalised has representation in its own museum should not be seen as a threat.

My two cents. (Or pence)

So I can go to the British Museum can I and tell then that they celebrate white history and are specifically about white people?

No I can't....and you know why that is.

Because it's about being British.....not white. The focus isn't on race.....So it's not the same or even close to it.

If it's ok for one race to have museums specifically celebrating their race.....well, then it's alright for other races too.

You shouldn't see that as a threat neither.

Your paragraph talking about 'exploitation and marginalization' is a narrative I don't agree with. It's propaganda used against white people to justify modern day victim industries like diversity programmes.

....and spending money on museums dedicated to one group's skin colour and racial genetics.

All good points and I personally don't see it as a threat. For me its marginalizing a group within our society.

The V&A is currently holding a Christian Dior retrospective. If I was a top BME fashion designer I would expect to be treated like Dior rather than being shoved off into a Black Museum.

One more point

The most pleasing thing about this thread is the lack of posters; it is clear the vast majority saw it for what it was and moved on.

Im off to the museum of white supremacy for a slap up, ethnic minority served meat feast with the OP.

?

It's been up for two hours and had about ten different posters.

There is no such thing as 'white supremacy'.....just more anti white propaganda that you have been brain washed into believing.

Yep.....and if they build it.....I look forward to the 'National Museum of Anglo Saxon History and Culture'.

That's no threat.

But already we have the 'white supremacy' comment.

I understand this view but it is not accurate.

Culture celebrated in British museums is not based on skin colour. It is universal.
The problem for Black people is that their part in it
is not very palatable for the most part because they have been largely excluded, not because they have been deliberately marginalised retrospectively, but simply because of their absence or lack of status.

There is now a movement to reinterpret history to paint prominent White figures in history such as Lincoln, Washington, Churchill etc as evil racists when they were just men of their time with the accepted attitudes of the time.
We cannot judge the past by modern standards and attitudes.
At the same time, there is an effort to talk up Black figures who were relatively unimportant to make them seem more historically significant than they ever were. .
Now the inventing and reinterpretation of history is nothing new but we mustn't continue to be fooled by it or encouraged into some sort of guilt trip or a sense of resentment about past events. That helps no one.

The problem is that people generally don't really want the 'truth' but a history that makes them feel good. You see this with ancestral research and cultural stories all the time.
Sadly, far too often, celebrating Black culture is divisive and often at the expense of the White man. This only perpetuates a narrative that guarantees continuing discord. Neither I or anyone else is responsible for something that our grandfather x5 did and neither can we blame him for living by the standards of the time.

Until we stop identifying as a colour or religion, we are doomed to repeat the same old pattern of division.

I'm not holding my breath.

I think a black cultural museum is a great idea.

Why shouldn't we embrace Marcus Garvey,Nelson Mandela,Bob Marley etc.
