I still feel Joel Ward's contribution over his time at Palace is still under rated. AWB has the pace to get himself out of trouble but his distribution, although improving, is not at the same level as Ward's. Wards pass to Schlupp that lead to the opening goal against Spurs shows his great awareness he has when going forward. Extremely reliable and I think whoever played in front of him always benefitted from his astute distribution particularly Wilf and Bolaise. Defensively very strong and if had a bit more pace he would have also not looked out of place in the England team.

Gordon was a left back.

Jamie Smith and Marc Edworthy were the dog's tits though.

I can't believe this but i agree with you

Still Doris for me at the moment, but if he hangs around long enough Wan Bissaka will over take him I’m sure

Doris was ok, but come on, he would never have shut out the class of players that W.B. has, week week out.

Johnny McNichol - Scottish right back and captain in late 50s early 60s. Unfortunately he once broke 2 opposition players legs in consecutive matches - that was when you were allowed to tackle.

He was a club fund raiser for a while I'm sure.

I second this.

I think Ward is our record Premier League appearance holder? Over 200 maybe ? It is easy to forget him now AWB is in.

By no means amazing, but a very steady player at this level and usually a 6 or 7 out of 10 each week.

Now your showing your age, however, i also remember him with fondness.

He did though, John Robertson, Trevor Francis,Steve Highway, Peter Barnes, Liam Brady, Peter Taylor(playing for spurs) all class in that era and Doris had them all in his pocket in his prime

Not exactly a RB either...

Lol! What position do you think he played for us then?!!!

He was a right footed fullback assigned the No 2 shirt through out his career, apart from No 17 whilst with us and Millwall.

He played right back for Millwall, Wolves, his Australian teams and the Australian National Team. And I probably saw 95% of his appearances in a Palace shirt (if not more) so please do enlighten us...

Aye right enough AWB is a talented young man. Our John Sewell was our captain, as you say he played the game and life in the right spirit. A Enerst Shackleton of his day.

John Sewell, captain, Caterham clothier, penalty taker - and right back. AWB has an ability to tackle that I've never seen before, he's a special player and we're lucky to be witnessing the start of what I hope is a fantastic career.

He was a centre back. A bad centre back.
