The Saints manager must be doing his nut after that, and they looked a poor outfit against us.

We are not far off looking at the number of points necessary, an annual event (sigh)....

Its good to see us respecting the point and not throwing games away, plus a strong squad.

A point a game seems par with our good defensive record so 39 points.

Here is hoping.........

I'd like to think not, but we seem unable to get a consistent run going to break away from the relegation pack.
We're getting towards the scary part of the season, but despite many good performances we are still only three points away from the crashing out of the Premier League zone.
We really need something like three wins on the spin, which is so hard to achieve.
But at least there does now only appear to be one relegation place still up for grabs.

A slight aside, how funny was Burnley's third goal!! Blatant penalty not given to Brighton, then that handball turns out to be the "pass" that sets off Burnley's counter from which they win a penalty! Burnley getting a lot of luck, but they have a team built for scrapping results. Cardiff running on fumes, but I really hope they stay up. Partly because of the Sala tragedy but also because I'd like Warnock to finish his career on a high. Saints were truly awful against us and yesterday's result suggests that might not have been a blip. They still have some quality going forward but look suspect at the back. Newcastle should be fine with Benitez at the helm. I think Fulham and Huddersfield will be joined either by Saints or Cardiff.

Even neutrals can see we are lower than our performances suggest. Yes we are still failing to convert chances, but at least we are creating them. I almost wonder if there is a gypsy curse on the goals at SP (a Charlton pikey curse perhaps?) Maybe we could get Bill Nighy to dress up as a priest (Eddie Izzard as a nun?)and come on the pitch before the next home game and do an exorcism.

Anyway, based on our squad, our performances and our experience we should be fine, albeit we can't rest on our laurels.

On paper but games are not won on paper.

Whilst I recognise the points and goal difference differential I am not as relaxed as your good self regards our prospects.

On balance I believe that we will probably survive but I wouldn't place a great deal of money on it ! The situation can change from game to game and in 5 games time we could be staring down the barrel more than those currently around us.

huddersfield gone, fulham almost gone.

we have played 2/3rd pf the season with no fit striker, we now have 3.

we are one of 6 teams who could realistically go down, but with roy in charge i am certain we will get the points needed to not be one of them.

and forgive me, its was so noticeable again yesterday clueless at throws in.. at least 3 times, we had a throw in halfway in WHam only within a couple of touches, the ball was with our keeper!!!!!
The have structure to corners......

Yesterday a Cabaye type pass or hopefully now Meyer will be given a full chance, we will see the early ball that Benteke so badly needs with an early splitting pass, not a measured slow build up defenders easily read..... play to mans strengths, he he really buzzing sharp but needs "good" game time .. ive got a feeling when Benteke gets to Leicester match, he will remember the last time (I think)we bet them 3-0.. watch an amazing lift off when Benteke scored (I was there moment!)
Hodgson has good points but hes defensive mindset!!

Agree.
We are in this position because we have missed too many chances and no team could have missed more open goals than us this season. The way we play a lot of chances are created for our wingers and midfielders and as we see week after week, they're all s*** from within 10 yards of goal. We have no free kick or corner routines, so the defence don't get too many chances to score. The system needs a big front man to win headers, but we desperately need a penalty box striker. Batshuayi has shown in two cameos that he doesn't play well with his back to big centre halves, it's not his game, so we really need to play both of them. That then could potentially leave us light in midfield.
Yesterday we passed about on the edge of the area,(like every game) non stop looking to walk it in and when Benteke went off we started hitting in crosses earlier. Surely that should be done when he's on the pitch? If you look back at the last 18 months or so our forwards are lucky if they get one chance a game. Rarely have they had more and IMO a big part of that is constantly pissing about on the edge of the area.

I think that's fair - Brighton are the worst on form but have the extra points so if we don't think they'll go I can't see us going. Newcastle have the best manager (of anyone outside the top 3 probably) and have been grinding through, Cardiff are the form team and have guts and i think that might just let them pip saints who are like a worse Everton.

another 3 wins AND a couple of draws should be enough to keep us up I personally reckon we will end up 11th or 12th personally

Really feel that this has been the first season since we came up again that I have not felt the massive nervousness before each game that we HAVE to get some points, that we are not in a relegation dog fight, despite the fact mathematically we are. Feel we are the most solid unit we have ever been both offensively and defensively.

Having said that how many times have we heard the phrase `too good to go down` used only for a team to look shell-shocked come the last few games of season as it happens.

Our run-in does look potentially ‘squeaky-bum’ but home wins against Brighton, Huddersfield and Bournemouth should be enough...perhaps provided we don’t lose all the rest.

I’ll be surprised if this hasn’t already been done in a Richard Curtis ‘comedy’.
