I think Sky and the BBC are trying to be seen as 'right on' with all of the 'ism's'.

Sky have decided that they're going big with women's sport at the moment. I mean showing netball - wtf is that all about ? It's like watching paint dry in slow motion. I'd love to know the viewing figures for that.

It's just tokenism, as is having women commentators and pundits at mens football. Most people I've spoken to hate the screeching of a woman commentator. It doesn't work and it's not popular so they should forget about being PC and drop it.

It can only be about viewing figures that obviously relates to advertising.

It is really nuts when you have female footballers discussing men's football. What the hell do they know about men's football? They have never played it.
And a double whammy. because most of them are lesbians so they get two identities for the price of one.

It's also irritating when they have players in discussions who speak English as a second language and you can barely understand what they are saying. Not that footballers usually have anything to say worth listening to anyway.

Isn’t a crusade against racism a good thing?
Ironic in some ways mind. The treatment of Sterling pre World Cup and to some extent Wilf suggests there are many in the media who think if you’re young, talented and black you’re fair game. The media have fuelled this.

But, if in the editing rooms there are some who take objection to people screaming ‘f**k off Mo Salah you f**king Muslim scum’ and want to launch a crusade then good for them. I hope the vast majority of us would challenge such language ourselves. Sadly, on recent HOL threads I worry that the moral compasses we had many years ago are all over the shop due to the current political situation worldwide.

Not if it is counterproductive, cynical and totally disproportionate.

You don't really agree with what? THat SKY Sports is obsessed with racism. Put it on now and you will see a race story or debate within ten minutes.

I ask the question for other opinions. I already know what I think.

Nah, I think they are all desperate for something to discuss, any half story gets dragged beyond recognition. Are they obsessed? I cant say, I dont watch it enough to agree or disagree but dont rule out confirmation bias...you might just be thinking they are like that because you are looking for it...on the other hand you might be right...

I have SKY Sports on a lot as background TV so I see a lot of what they broadcast.

My point in summary is that racism is no worse than it has ever been and at a time when you would expect there to be more instances due to the vastly larger number of non white players.
I believe that the constant media obsession is about sensationalism and coverage and less about proper context.

Fair enough - you undoubtedly see more than me, I don’t even have the channels.

I don’t agree that you would expect to see more instances now than ever though - social attitudes have changed massively even if you only go back as far as the 90s when there was still plenty of non white players.

There’s definitely an element of looking for a story wherever they can given they report 24/7 - either way, if it continues to increase pressure on genuine instances of racial abuse, I think the pros outweigh the cons.

I applaud Sky for making people aware and discussing racism in football grounds.

If it makes a few more people at football matches report racist abuse of footballers then all well and good.

I do agree to a certain extent BE,but you must of noticed that at football at least it's no where near as bad as it was.
I cant remember the last time I heard anything racist at the palace (I'm in the Arthur).

Trouble is that I don't think that some will ever be satisfied.
They use 'racism' as a route to influence and personal gain. Some people's jobs depend on tackling racism. They don't want it to disappear.

Funnily enough I flicked sky sports news on earlier to catch the headlines and a segment called 'tackling racism' was just finishing up. It does seem to have gone into overdrive and I'm not convinced it's done with sincerity, it's done for a story.

Only a tiny percentage of football fans would ever shout racist abuse and that has largely been the case forever.
Why give those people air time when such idiocy has and will exist all the time humans exist?
In my opinion, ceasing coverage of these isolated incidents will do more to reduce them than giving them daily exposure.
It's for the same reason that they promote women's sport. It's just to entice more viewers to watch advertising.

Yeah, agree with this. Education has taken care of ignorance regarding prejudice. Anybody still spouting racist abuse is just a nasty f***er and you're always going to get a cross section of these people: it's never going to go away completely because you cannot control thought.

To have it on the radio/sky on repeat constantly only serves to shame the ordinary fan and undermines the message.

John Barnes and Paul Ince popping up every couple of weeks to either call Winny a racist or demand jobs for black managers to prove football isn't racist probably doesn't help either to be fair.

What I don’t get at the Palace is the lack of black fans. I reckon there are no more than say 3% non white which is totally out of kilter with our playing staff say 40% and our non playing staff say 70%.
Why is this? The surrounding say 5 mile circumference must be about 50/50 black/ white and always seems fully integrated.
Are the local black community the only sensible ones among us who are not prepared to be ripped off?!! I mean who in their right minds wants to sit at Selhurst in the freezing cold with cramped squalid conditions with crap food on offer paying a fortune for nearly 2 hours of pressure/ frustration/ discomfort etc etc.!!
Seriously though there is a massive imbalance of race in our fan base compared to the local community. Can you imagine the potential crowd numbers if more local black folk attended?
And while I’m on just a word for the super friendly security guys who check us all in every home match. Really cool dudes and always so welcoming.

Isn't the surrounding area mostly Asian?

Why is it only a black issue?
