The Monkees were good fun, and fair play to them for making songs written by Neil Diamond vaguely listenable. For a while, at school, you had to declare whether you were 'The Monkees' or 'The Beatles'. The Monkees seem to have had a song either entitled or known as 'Randy Scouse Git'. I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve got most of the monkees hits on my 60’s playlist because it’s still great stuff Edited by monkey (22 Feb 2019 9.54am)

Sad news. Until last year, I wasn't aware that Carol King wrote some of their hits. Another Pleasant Valley Sunday probably being the biggest one.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

The lyrics talk about the 'Four Kings of EMI' - The Beatles. I also saw The Monkees at the RAH on their 45th Anniversary Tour, and saw Peter at The Borderline in about 2004. Really nice guy. Very sad news.

Just been reading up on the Monkees. I am old enough to remember them just but wanted to refresh my memory. The press slaughtered them at the time as the "Pre Fab Four" (Apparently the Beatles knew and liked them). This was unfair as they were musicians to a certain standard and did write some of their own stuff and took control of their career. However they have never received any respect from the music industry. The press were sniffy they didn't play on their own records in the early days and yet today this is standard practice for many artists. Many of today's manufactured artists cannot read or write music nor play any instruments but they have the look which seems to be the main thing. So I guess as a manufactured band they were ahead of their time and were probably more talented than some of the current Simon Cowell type stable. RIP Peter time to quit monkeeing around.
