I'm not sure I will be voting for any party but I will be voting for my MP who helped me a lot with the DWP when I was suffering with depression.

You raise an excellent point here. When a group of MPs recently chose principle over party the whips were calling for byelections on the grounds electorate vote for parties not people. I can't imagine any rationale Conservative voter in my area putting an X next to Failing Grayling, even he would probably tick the wrong box.
Some people may vote for parties but I would wager the majority vote for policies at the time and maybe equally for individuals.
In times when most people (and I think I can say that confidently) lack trust in politicians, if you are lucky enough to have one you trust then it makes sense to vote for them even if you don't support their party.

Agreed, if I had a decent local mp I'd vote for them if they were any good, otherwise it's none of the above.
