Excellent thread.
Can I recommend in no particular order. For maybe the more,er, mature readers.
Only a game? A strange kind of glory, and The Rocky Road,
all by Eamon Dunphy.
Spirit of 58-The story of Northern Ireland at 58 World Cup.
Tony Cascarino's book.(bit of an Irish theme so far).

Woody & Nord a football friendship. Andy Woodman and Gareth Southgate.
The Glory Game-Hunter Davies
The Damned United-David Peace
The Bromley Boys-Dave Roberts
All Played Out-Pete Davies
My Favourite Year-When Saturday Comes
Not Playing for Celtic-David Bennie
Dancing in the streets-Don Wilson
and for Christmas I was given 'Palace at the Palace' a must for anybody interested in the origins of our club.

For all those who like "The Bromley Boys - Dave Roberts" - my personal favourite - I can further recommend "On Fire with Fergie - Stuart Donald"

If we're staying Norn Iron - always enjoyed reading anything by Danny Blanchflower.

All Played Out is excellent. I enjoyed The Damned United but Peace’s book Red or Dead is a struggle to finish. It veers between weirdly hypnotic and crazed repetition. Often on the same page.

Journeyman by Ben Smith is a great tale of the reality in the lower leagues. I’d recommend it to any footy fan.

Vive le Roy!

Surprised no one has mentioned We All Follow the Palace which was compiled by the Eagle Eye fanzine. It’s very enjoyable.

Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius Of Dutch Football
David Winner

Great read and ventures very engagingly beyond Total Football and Cruyff to Dutch culture and architecture.

Albion Albion by Dick Morland 1976

Written by the British crime writer Reginald Hill under a pseudonym, this novel was surprisingly good and creative, and is a somewhat humorous thriller about a renowned journalist who is kidnapped on a flight and trapped in a dystopian near-future England split amongst four competing football clubs, United, City, Wanderers and Athletic — the book is filled with lingo based on football terms, and ties football hooliganism to fascism.

Why worry about TODAY when TOMORROW will be even worse.

A Season with Verona by Tim Parks is excellent.

Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby.

The former is one of my favorite books on sports.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

The best football book I know is called 'Promised Land' by Anthony Clavane. It's about Leeds United but don't let that put you off. It's a profound and intelligent book that looks to the past and the future. It's very well written and makes for a great read. It was Sports Book of the Year a few years ago. Clavane used to write about football for The Sunday Mirror. Read it, you won't be disappointed.
