WW2, and specifically Churchill, caused a huge divide with Ireland and the UK.
Churchill promised a united Ireland if Eire soldiers went to war. Many thousands of Irish soldiers fought in WW2.
And yet, paradoxically, there was no blackout in Dublin of a night. All their lights were left ablaze, which enabled the Luftwaffe to triangulate where cities of Liverpool and Coventry were, (amongst others)

Weird how only one soldier is being charged for Bloody Sunday. I guess ballistics could only identify his weapon.
No terrorists have been identified for the murders of Mountbatten, those 2 soldiers who drove into an IRA funeral, Brighton hotel bomb, horseguards bombing, Enniskillen, The Post Office tower bomb ,....(please correct if I am wrong).

Just seems very one-sided.

I wouldn't be surprised it's because they know that no one is coming for them if they punish their own side.

Men like Churchill and Airey Neave were made of different stuff. Our leaders today are far more interested in a quiet life than standing for something.

After Neave was murdered, James Callaghan said: 'No effort will be spared to bring the murderers to justice and to rid the United Kingdom of the scourge of terrorism'.

Yeah.....Did really well didn't they......one sided isn't the half of it.

Not sure anyone was convicted of the murder of pat finucane, a catholic lawyer, widely said to have been targeted by a collusion of british army, ruc and loyalist terrorists, thats worth investigating! And lets not forget john stalker, head of manchester police, sent to northern ireland to see if the army/ ruc had a shoot to kill policy, widely denied by the con government, he came back after a few months and gave his answer, they did! He was fired soon after, it wasn"t the answer the cons wanted!r.i.p john stalker, an honest cop, in a dishonest system!

If the British had a proper 'shoot to kill' policy.....they must have certainly been pretty crap at it.....that said, I have little doubt that this was reality during certain circumstances....but policy? I doubt it.

Is anybody talking about the IRA's policy? When they targeted people...were they tying one arm behind their own backs?

Two 'main' people were convicted for the murder of the two Corporals at the funeral.....though many were apart of that action...Convictions for others happened but were on lesser charges. It was brutal.....The soldiers were dragged from the car and taken to a nearby sports ground where they were beaten, stripped and searched. They were then driven to nearby waste ground where they were shot dead.

The main 'two' identified served ten years and were released in 98 as a part of the proceedings leading up to the Good Friday agreement....no one served anything after 98.

Shortly after the murders one of the pistols taken from the corporals....who had refused to fire on the initial attack on the car....one of those pistols was used to murder another soldier Lance-Corporal Roy Butler.

And we are prosecuting a solder for Bloody Sunday.

True

But Stirling’s post stated we did it because the Germans were doing it to us which was untrue.

The 'air' campaign stuff isn't an area of WW2 that I'm that knowledgeable about.....So if I said something inaccurate, apologies.

I'll look into it at some point.

Fair enough stirling, im still of the opinion that if bloody sunday had not happened, 3000 people might not have died, whether unionists, nationalists, soldiers or joe public, as i said before, the Ira were only a small movement with not much appetite for anything in the wider community, after bloody sunday that changed rapidly, so those soldiers who did the killings really have the blood of 3000 on their hands, even their own side! Bloody Sunday was the spark that got hundreds of nationalists involved in something most would not have bothered with, and the civil rights movement was another story, Catholics denied jobs and housing , it wouldn"t happen today, but thats another story!

I suppose we differ a bit that without bloody Sunday the IRA wouldn't have been a serious threat with significant loss of life.....Lets not forget why the British troops were there in the first place....the riots in 69....lets not forget that the IRA had been operating for decades.

Still, I agree that Bloody Sunday was a recruiting rallying cry. However, a sore left to fester eventually becomes far worse anyway...or in other words these confrontations were inevitable and the more confrontations you have with armed men....the more likely a Bloody Sunday will happen.

The experiences of the British in NI just reaffirms to me a truth I've learnt as I've got older......Democracies operating with any sense of control can't win expedition wars.

The will isn't there and the internal discord that is inherent within a democracy eventually will defeat it.....as both Russia and China well know.

Should the British have been trying to win in NI? That's a question where my opinion has started to change a bit.

As a nationalist I have an understanding of the feelings of the type of men in the IRA. They are still my enemy because they were prepared to kill my kin instead of purely using politics..... but I know that nationalist mindset.

Like I say, if the British really were determined to stay there then a wall was the only answer......As it is...the people who tried to make it work only enabled the deaths of many thousands of people.....before essentially giving NI away anyway.....so much for 'no surrender'.

This pretense that it can be made to work is much like what we are seeing in other areas now.

i favour a slow ( 30 years +) partition of Northern Ireland into East and West, Prod and Catholic.

use social housing, the dole etc to enforce the change.

Prod living in Derry ? swap with Mrs Murphy living in Belfast...here is a few quid for your troubles.

Catholic won't budge from their home in Warrenpoint ? cut their dole back.

Very quickly the change would gather its own momentum. Peace all round.

start with all the dole-heads and everybody else would follow.
