There was a piece on the news about how the recommendation engine and algorithm on Youtube funnels people into seeing suggested content that's a more radical version of what they've previously viewed. More exciting versions over time just based on how the algorithm works to keep people on the site. That's fine with most content, with examples of people looking at jogging videos being presented with ultra marathon clips over time. Clearly with religious ideology, identity politics and the like though it can result in a gradual detachment from wider society, leading to people splintering off in various directions.

Of course if we do get a hold on mass immigration, I'm of the belief that will help somewhat. I don't think we need yet more world views and fragmentation in the mix at this time.

The online problem though is very real. If anything many Muslim extremists, right wing extremists, left wing, whatever , are more specifically online extremists, internet extremists. People dissatisfied with life looking for answers in the wrong places. They have latched onto one thread of what it is to be a human being, whether religious, racial, black or white, and an area they're emotionally attached to has become something much more amplified and central, then sometimes more dangerous. It was very much the modus operandi that ISIS relied on to push their message to others around the world.

It's true of this guy too. The racial separatist manifesto, the links provided to his views, the invitation on 8chan to tune in, the live streaming of the actual killings. It was all with a view of spreading an agenda and being seen committing these acts. Would he honestly have bothered without the Internet? Would he hold the same views he does with this level of intensity?

This guy has dug his own grave and tragically others too, but a look at these algorithms and what they present is a piece of the puzzle even if it does sound trivial on the surface. Not censorship of any kind, just not a ramped up, one tone, 'your view on steroids' auto playlist that descends to places detached from decency, community and commonality. At best it leads to people who spend every waking hour imagining their identity is the only one under attack, while simultaneously, routinely and needlessly attacking the identities of others to maintain the spell. At worst? God only knows.
