I think this is answered in the thread - Guinness. It has in mainstream pubs got the stout market sown up, has a huge marketing budget and on this day sells huge amounts of the black stuff. They also have a ready made market in people looking to claim Irish roots.

Its similar to any say in say an Edinburgh summer with Americans 'coming home,' to a place they have never been to in their lives.

Not sure there is a big enough drinks manufacturer to have the clout to create something around say St Georges day, but some try.

And of course, woe betide anyone who wants to fly the flag of St George! Bloody racists

Exactly.

Weatherspoons Lewisham promotes Paddy's day with bunting, balloons, cheap beer and give away green hats. On St Georges day a few years back not only nothing but a bloke walked in with an England shirt and was told to leave as they don't serve colours.

Sorry. Just don’t get it when the non Irish segments of the UK go mad for Paddy’s Day. Similarly with Burns’ Night.

I can just see the Scots go for an all out pee up to celebrate St George’s Day.

Kinda agree but with St. Patrick being English(oh I’ve just started something there!&#128514 I see no reason not to join in and have a couple o’ pints of the black stuff! Ollie’s Dad, Ash.

Try celebrating St Georges day in Dublin, see how long you last.

Same old same old we have to respect everyone else's culture and festivals but god forbid we are allowed to celebrate our own.

They've tried a few times in NYC to get something up & running St Georges Day wise,& I think they normally have something going on down at the South St Seaport.
They call it 'England Day' for some reason? & is sponsored by the usual suspects like the British Consulate & Virgin Atlantic Etc & a small 'English' business like me they aren't interested in.
Anyway drinking warm ale & singing 'Always look in the Bright side of life' doesn't really appeal to me.

Groundhog Day can be an early prediction of Spring.

Paddy's Day is our prediction of our imminent Premier League Survival.

And from Saint Patrick who drove the snakes out of Ireland, to Patrick Viera who is a true Eagle.

Joyeuse Saint Patrick, Naomh Phádraig Shona ,

greetings to all little countries with big powerful neighbours....especially Ukraine.

Who do you reckon have been our best Irish players (or 'Irish', I suppose, given one of my choices)? How about:

Jerry Murphy
Ray Houghton

I don't get it either. Last time I checked, St George was still the Patron Saint of England.

The amount of times I heard on telly today announcers and TV show hosts wishing everyone a happy St Patrick's day was ridiculous.

People who wished me a happy St Patrick's day in person were told I'm not Irish, so I don't celebrate it.

Did either of them hit a long range beauty againt Livarpool that in no way took any deflection despite what the poor camera angle seemed to show?

The audacity not to include Damien Delaney in there YT! For shame!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
