Wikileaks....while there are some issues there.....has been a net positive so far.

We need freedom on the web and I suspect that this is authoritarianism via states looking for any means to drown it.

Agreed – A new president + offer of a new deal for loans with Trump = Assange in return. Same old same old, as you'd expect.

Assange should not get to decide which laws he will or will not respect. He was awaiting deportation to Sweden not America.

Further the idea that Sweden will roll over for the Americans is nonsense. The Swedes on multiple occasions have depth charged Russian sub sneaking into their waters.

If you believe Assange the Swedish justice system is not to be trusted which if I were Swedish I would find offensive. I have no idea if he is guilty of these sexual offences or even if the Swedes still want him that is their decision. But he fled from due process in the UK and we need to send a message to him and the speedboat killer that you cannot get away with this otherwise you just invite further trouble.

Perfect reply.

Well the Ecuadorians are rolling over aren't they and we are just obeying the little laws foreign states have given us....like a good little country.

He's been arrested on a US extradition warrant.

This isn't in my name and I don't trust or support any of it.

I use to be against Wikileaks because.....and it's still a problem.....where are the checks and balances on them themselves?

However, they have no power other than the release of information. There must be a means for the truth to out.

The issue i have with Wikileaks is the lack of editorial control. Apparently in the documents he released there was information that put lives in danger and if you believe the Americans lives were lost. I don't care if Hillary sent an email in which she was rude about a leader I do care if a document outs an undercover agent.

Apparently the documents that the Guardian got they did black out names if they felt there was a risk. By all means tell the story you don't have to mentioned that the dictator's right hand man is spying for the USA.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'The Arrest of Julian Assange' by kenbarr

Finally, a news story in London I feel comfortable commenting on. At long last Julian Assange is in British custody where he belongs. Running away to the Ecuadorean Embassy to escape proper extradition to Sweden to face charges of assault/rape makes him a coward in my eyes. Claiming the charges were a means to extradite him to the US makes him a liar. If Sweden extradited Americans for the tittle-tattle he "leaked" a whole lot of American asylum seekers from the Vietnam era would have been unceremoniously deported decades ago. The myth that this fraud is anything other than someone who believes himself to be a superior life form but puts his trousers on the same way the rest of the world does, one leg at a time, is about to be exposed. Assange is an emporer without clothes. In my view, the US should have disclaimed any interest in him during the time of the Manning trial. Now that he may be involved in Russian efforts to hack the 2016 US Elections he becomes a "person of interest." Shame, that. All he ever was is a two bit hacker with a conviction in Australia to prove it. Too bad the Swedish charges were dropped. I'm sure he treats women as badly as anyone else who won't do his bidding. His punishment should be along the lines of the Flying Dutchman. Set him adrift on the Seven Seas to sail about, never being allowed to make port. British prisons are too good for the likes of this particular type of guttersnipe.

I do of course agree with this......if it's true.

I have no means of knowing.....but I know that states lie and manipulate the truth all the time.....as do the press.

Whereas Wikileaks aren't lying they are releasing and you then make your mind up......and they say they do redact as did the Guardian with that particular release.

Would things seriously be better if Wikileaks was allowed to be destroyed? Personally I suspect that this is behind all of this.

I watch in dismay as authoritarians slowly dismantle freedom on the web.

It's a valid point but Assange has scored an own goal by refusing to censor anything that could put lives in danger. I suspect that was because of laziness too many documents for him to read so he just dumped them on the Internet. That is not the act of a responsible person.

The odd thing is that if you start to ask questions about his personal life and journalist have he gets very defensive and doesn't like it, hypocrict.

The fact that he claims to believe in transparency for everyone but himself is telling: as is the fact that Wikileaks refused to publish the files from the huge Russian leak in 2016 with the claim that leak was “insignificant.” I suppose it was as it was only 174 terabytes of files on Russian kleptocrats, flight 17, Russian hacking, the Ukraine invasion, etc. Clearly there was nothing to see there.

I do of course agree that it's valid to criticise Wikileaks and of course Assange.

But I just don't trust the accusers.

Do you believe the press are interested in truth or money? Governments interested in truth or power?

We need a method by which the truth can out.

Personally i'm not convinced by any of it.

Well, what was revealed that wasn't already known? The important thing is.....did the information come out.

We are all pretty convinced on Russian/Putin culpability for these.

Nothing strange really happens within the intelligence community does it? And there are never any fit-ups just to get your 'man'. MI5, MI6, the CIA, the NSA have always acted with integrity and have always been above rebuke.
That's what Patrice Lumumba told me the other day anyway.
