The ideal way to play AWB is to pass it round him. His positional sense is still not that great and he relies on his speed to get back into position. Ward reads the game better but doesn't have the speed. Give AWB another year or so and he will be the finished article.

I totally agree.

I am not stating in any way or form that Ward is a better player than AWB but I can't imagine that anyone this weekend was commenting that we missed AWB on the pitch. We kept a clean sheet and Ward will hold his own as he is a good defender. AWB wont be missed as much as people think but we still badly need cover for Ward.

We’ve only played one game. Wait until we’re a month or two in. A lot on here seem to have forgotten the image of wardy being beaten and scrambling back to stop the cross going in, which he often didn’t. There’s been lots of other mishaps.

He’s good for a good run of games as stand in but not 38 games or 9 months. Not even 4-5 months. He’ll get found out And targeted. Watch after the first winger roasts him and it’s on the pre match videos of all of our opponents.

After watching the game on Saturday I am more worried about PVA than I am Ward as PVA leaves so much space and makes no attempt to close down the opposition from crossing at least Ward kept tight to his man.

After kicking the football off the goal line last Saturday PVA is my superhero.

Same as all our players, that's why they're not at Man.U

What are we going to do when he gets injured?

Can anybody name another team anywhere in the professional leagues of Europe that only has one right back? Genuine curiosity.

We don't have much cover for our left back either.

Off the top of my head I am thinking about Brighton who have Montoya who is a right-back.Their other right backs from last season, Bruno and Suttner have retired/been sold, however I understand they played with a back three on Saturday with Montoya and March as the wing-backs.Left-back Bernardo can fill-in at right-back but this is not his natural position.

I don’t understand how you can say, he would be ok only for a run of games and then not. It will totally depend on the opponents. He is an experienced player in the Premier, I don’t understand why he is getting all this flack. On the other side we have PVA who lets countless crosses come into the box, as he is often out of position.
Having said all that, Roy sets us up very solid and difficult to play against, he will be aware of any weakness in the defence and make sure we play as a team not individuals.

Thought he was great today.

Just wanted to give the lad some respect.

Ok he’s not AWB, but what a servant. Been with us since the championship and still doing a job. Always gives his best.

Even when he wasn’t making the team last year he didn’t bitch he just got on with things.

Great attitude. Can see him staying another few years and getting a testimonial.
