I can usually fix most computer problems but this one is winding me up.

I started my laptop yesterday morning only to discover that the spacebar and some number keys did not function.
I tried uninstalling the keyboard and pointing device drivers and reinstalling at startup several times but no luck. I have tried resetting defaults in bios and am running a virus check now but don't expect an answer from that.
I can use a usb connected keyboard and that works fine.

Anyone got a miracle cure?

As you have tried restalling Windows and drivers if the virus checks give you no joy then perhaps a hard format is the only recourse.

Try pressing all the F* keys at the top in combination with alt or function key.

Take it to the repair let’s for £20.

My local one was on the bbc documentary the 2 twins did on alcohol. He was in a group of testees. He apparently is one of very that doesn’t feel the effects of alcohol and can drink copious amounts of the stuff and appear relatively unaffected.

He’s an ethnic minority btw (for the liberals who think we’re 100% prejudiced) but is obviously mixing in no problem. Nice bloke.

Sensible answer: (I can help more if you PM me the model).

Usually the only fix for a laptop keyboard playing up that way is to "unplug it" clean the contacts and plug it back in. There may be two "plugs" but normally there is a flat cable that comes out of the keyboard that plugs into the motherboard.

There should be a cream coloured hinge that lifts which allows you to remove the cable, remove clean the contacts with a cotton bud soaked in vodka or similar, reseat and close the hinge.
There may be a corresponding "plug" on the underside of the keyboard.

So you think it's hardware?

It happened with no prior warnings on startup.

I will take it apart and have a look at a convenient moment. Thanks.

A bit drastic at this stage.

Yeah I bet it's hardware, it's really just like your car, it works perfectly until it doesn't.
It really is'nt a difficult job. I am not saying it will fix it, you may need to replace the keyboard.

I tend to agree that it's likely to be a hardware problem. The fact that the USB keyboard works fine further suggests that.

Replacement laptop keyboards are usually cheap and relatively easy to replace. I'd buy one and try that. If it works, problem solved and you've saved yourself a lot of additional faffing about.
