I haven't seen a milkman and float in literally years. I know they do exist, but very few people use them, plus they work in the middle of the night.

I'd imagine most of their customers must be housebound old age pensioners, as its easy to get milk in all local shops these days, and much cheaper

I get a milkman, convenience, not much more and I like the nostalgia. Plus it gives a bloke a job.

Milky tends to still be very much about in the areas of older people (Goring by sea, ferring etc by me.)

For those old enough, remember they used to sell glass bottles of orange juice, along with gold top milk and no semi skimmed in evidence.

I may be wrong but I think milky had to buy the product himself then re-sell to public?

Originally (or when I was a girl) they were all employed by the dairies (they would pay anyone they hired as a 'Saturday boy/girl'). It was only later, 80's/90's, that they became self-employed and bought the round, at which time they bought from the dairy and sold on to the customer - that's when they started to also sell bread, eggs, cheese and other stuff.

btw I loved that orange juice as a kid.

I think the juice was real , not squash but really thinned out ,Becky.

On the subject of orange squash I reckon most of the 60s-70s stuff would be banned now.
it may have been orange in colour but tasted pure chemical.
Loaded with E nos which probably made for very naughty children.

Our previous and long standing milkman worked civilised hours and our 2 pints would usually arrive around 9:30am.

In the 4 or 5 years since the new one took over we have never seen him as he delivers in the dead of night. For a while we wondered why our dog, who used to sleep at the foot of our bed, would have a barking fit in the middle of the night. It took a while to put two and two together to realise she was hearing the milkman at the door. We have since banished the poor creature to a distant room at night.

I suspect our previous Milko might have been edged out by Milk & More ( the providing company) because he wasn't prepared to operate what is basically a night shift.

And a footnote: one day when our milk didn't arrive I phoned the customer service number to tell them of this oversight expecting to speak to someone at the local depot which is 2/3 miles away.My call was answered by someone in India

9:30? No wonder the lazy f***er went out of business. No good having the milk delivered 2 hours after you get to work!

I thought milkmen had been abolished. Haven't seen one for years.

did they ever have baker's vans? I know milko's might have a few baked extras along side the yoghurt and buttermilk options. If there were mobile pliers of loaves and pastries then maybe Two Ton Ted from Teddington is based on historical fact. A customer may have actually swooned at his macaroon. Another thing, Joe Brand used to make up silly words to annoy Susie Dent when she was in dictionary corner on Countdown. She once declared an 'eight' explaining that if milkmen had milk crates then mobile bakers could have a 'buncrate'. Maybe she was right all along.

Living in Carshalton as a nipper, I certainly remember the (Clark's) bakery van.

I loved the dog eared book they used to keep their records in. Was my Milkman the only one who smelt of milk slightly going off or were they all like that?
