What does Howe mean by "really well" not quite outstanding or made a real difference to the defence.

Am I right in thinking that when he won the Player of the Year award he had so little regard for the fans that he couldn't be bothered to turn up to receive it? I was there, the only one I’ve been to. People couldn’t believe that he’d gone on holiday. Bad attitude from the player and looked bad on the club.
