My guess is to protect themselves they ask everybody that way they cannot be sued for discrimination against one group or another.

Anyone who has sold alcohol in the UK will tell you that the company makes it clear it's down to you and if you make a mistake you pay the fine and any other consequences including getting fired. In other words the shops and bars wipe their hands of it.

As the fine is over £100 I don't blame staff who may go over the top why should they risk it when they are hung out to dry by their employer.

I witnessed a member of staff in Weatherspoons get done on a test purchase. It was a joke there is no underage drinking problem in my spoons he made a mistake.

Meanwhile the real culprits which are the mini markets get away it we had one in Beckenham that got done time after time and should have been closed down by the police / council.

That’s probably right. I’m only passing on the information for anyone going to America. I’ve been going there for 35 years and it’s never happened to me before so maybe they’re getting stricter.

Having run places that serve alcohol, it is often easier to have staff id everyone. It is better for the staff, as if they make a mistake in not carding someone they can be held liable for selling alcohol to a minor. It is also better for the business as it reduces their liability.

I am in my fifties and still periodically get carded. It is usually at a liquor store near one colleges. Hence, I suspect, their caution.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.
