Boris is odds on favourite now. Hunt 9/2, Leadsom lingering around at 9-1. Gove's tanked after the drug revelations. A dog eat dog contest.

Lots of 'also rans'. I saw someone describing Esther McVey as ‘the kind of person who’d turn off your life support machine to charge her iPhone.’ Then again almost all politicians are career before country, so whoever wins it would be entirely predictable for the promises and the reality to end up being worlds apart.

So the Conservative MPs having already thwarted the will of the people by holding up Brexit are now going to thwart their own membership by denying them the leader that the 200,000 members want.

Sounds like the Conservative party are about to press the self destruct button and will have no-one to blame but their own MPs

The Tory Party has 124,000 members. It's MPs are only too aware that their views are well out of line with the country as a whole so them being able to choose who becomes our PM could easily produce an untenable situation.

I have long argued that whilst the membership should choose who is their overall Chairman that the MPs alone should choose who leads them in Parliament. No caucus, from any party, should have the ability to choose who is our PM. That ought to happen in Parliament. I don't like the idea that a left wing caucus chose Corbyn either. Our job as voters is to choose our Parliament and I want the PM to be chosen by those we choose. All of us, not just a bunch of activists.

The Conservative MPs, together with all the others, have been doing their duty and doing what we elected them to do. Which is to use their collective judgements to deliver what they believe is in our best interests and not what any particular group, however large or vocal, or whether they express their views here or in a referendum.

Both the Tories and Labour undertook to respect the outcome of the 2016 referendum at the last GE. Neither said how. Both are still trying. Either could change their position, just as individual voters can, in the light of new knowledge or events. Parliament as whole is working, albeit by reaching a stalemate which only another GE will likely solve. This is our democracy in action. That some don't like what it means is unfortunate but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

So those Conservative MPs may well decide that it's not in the country's interests to see Johnson installed as PM and make sure he is not one of the top two. They may well also decide it's not in the party's interests either because no-one is more likely to cause a permanent split.

Who gets the Willo vote?

At present I am happy to don a "Back Boris" badge.
However, I do see merits in Michael Gove.

Whilst "Bojo with the mojo" is the odds-on favourite, no conservative candidate who has been favourite has coveted the crown since 1965.

As Boris studied the Classics I'm sure he would have read of The Pseudologoi and I think this has been his persona ever since.

What is the point in Rory Stewart?

And why does he keep doing that cliche politician thing with his hand in interviews? Weak fist like he’s holding up a scrap of paper or card and moving it forward on every point?

A few weeks ago I witnessed a lady on television (Cannot remember who it was) saying that in her opinion Rory Stewart was a "Dark horse" in the leadership contest. He could well fall at the first hurdle tomorrow.

He tells the truth. He isn't all spin and intra-party schmoozing. He doesn't stand a chance this time around, I doubt that is why he stepped forward though.

Latest candidate support numbers :

Johnson 83, Hunt 37, Gove 34, Raab 23, Javid 19, Hancock 16, Harper 8, Stewart 7, McVey 6, Leadsom 4

That is 238 out of 313 Conservative MPs.

Today we will find out whether the votes of the 75 undeclared Tory MPs break decisively for Johnson, for another of the leading candidates, or go all over the place.
We will see if Hunt gains most of them to overhaul Johnson and win the first ballot.
We will also see how badly last weekend’s revelations have hit Michael Gove’s support.

Looking forward to the result !
