The two don't "go hand in hand"! What you describe might be the convention but it isn't the law. We elect individuals and not parties. The time to express a view is at a GE and only at a GE. An individual might decide to seek a fresh mandate and resign but that is their decision alone.

Of course they do; so if Chuka decided he was going to jump ship (again) to the Nazi party (not as far fetched as it seems given his current record) it's ok to wait it out until the next GE and not force a by-election?

Laws can be changed and adapted to suit the times: it's still a hangable offence to rustle sheep or commit arson against a naval vessel but it's not enforced.

You'd sing a different tune if he jumped ship to the brexit party...

As the wind blows so does Chuka.

A colleague of his once remarked, " I wouldn't say Chuka is arrogant but he think's he is his own representative on earth "

Fortunately for him those who will decide that are those who live and vote in the Streatham constituency. If he is doing what he believes to be right then he is doing his job, despite what you, I, or anyone else thinks.

I like MPs who stand up for their principles and aren't just party fodder. I want our MP's in control of Parliament and not the Party machines and activist membership. Which is why I find the current Tory leader election so distasteful.

I like MPs who vote in line with the party manifesto that got them elected in the first place

No, I am referring to all members. If anyone decides that the party has moved so far from the principles that they hold themselves that they can no longer remain a member, or that circumstances have changed so much since the last GE that a fresh approach is demanded then that's their decision alone. An MP's job is always to do what they believe is in our best interests.

Some may decide to stay and fight inside their party. Some may decide that's hopeless and leave. Some may decide to seek a fresh mandate and force a by election. All are valid decisions but they are not for us to make, they are for the member alone. Our opinion on that decision comes at the next GE, if they stand again in that constituency. That's when voters can change their minds.

What principles would that be? Hanging on to their job at any cost? The issue is not that Chukka has decided to move on, the issue is that having done so he hasn't asked his constituency to endorse his actions.

He and the other TIGS wanted a 2nd referendum because they believe the public has changed their minds but they don't want to put themselves forward to that same test.

At the next GE I am confident that all of them will lose their seats.

Excellent point.

I can understand a situation where an unexpected incident arises (not in the party manifesto) and an MP decides to vote with their conscience. For example the vote to go to war over Syria.

However the 2017 GE was post the Brexit vote and post Corbyn being leader of the Labour party. Nothing has changed since then for the TIGS and they went into that GE with that knowledge. So their complaints about why they left sound a little hollow.

Tory leadership candidate debate.
As you would expect, all candidates said the right things and came across well.
Interesting that BJ gives it a swerve, and his poll-rating goes up

I think the chair lies less, makes fewer racist comments and has more guts than BJ.

I can assure you that, unlikely though it might be, it wouldn't make any difference to my view. Once elected MP's answer only to their own conscience. That is their job and they must be free of all outside pressure and influence to do it. Our job is to decide who we want every time there is a GE or by election.

Then you want to send delegates to Parliament. Delegates who are controlled by party machines and vote like sheep. Party machines who are controlled by activists and not the electorate as a whole. Activists who control the manifesto.

That isn't British Parliamentary Democracy.

As they stand a much bigger chance of losing their jobs at the next GE than by staying within their original party that has to be untrue.

Chuka's constituents will get their opportunity at the next GE, after the dust has settled and the emotions quietened down, he has had time to explain himself more fully to them and his record since can be examined.

He may well lose his job, but until then he remains the MP for Streatham just as he has been since the last GE and will go on fighting their corner and using his best abilities on their behalf.

Leaving out your emotive language that is exactly what I want. I know very little about my MP except that he is a Conservative and supports the Conservative manifesto.

I couldn't care less whether the manifesto is controlled by party activists or naked morris dancers as long as I agree with it's content

The day the Tory party supports Rory Stewart as leader is the day the right stop supporting the Tories.

As stated he is a Lib Dem in Tory clothes.
