With our central defenders, regularly injured. We do need cover . None of the kids , are yet ready,. The season hasn’t started yet and already . Tompkins, looks well short and Sakho doesn’t look ready yet. Pre - season, and the Dann, Kelly. are not exactly looking sound.
Cahill, could easily be the answer, as unlike Brighton,we don’t look like we have got £20 million to buy a promising young player.
The only risk is Cahills form. But you can never bank on form ,no matter what their age is.

Woods is our promising young player and already on our books... just not yet?

Cahill to provide the stop-gap.

70,000 per week for a 33 year old. That will help the wage bill
Still, on the bright side he will be fresh. Hardly pulled his shirt on last year

Expensive and old, this move isn’t a good one imo. Sakho, Tonks, Dann, Kelly, Kouyate and Riedewald. Is CB cover absolutely necessary especially at the cost mentioned.

Not disrespect to you but really you think that Woods can go straight to the Premier without any experience at all?
Although he might be getting old but I don't get all the criticism, I'd take him on a free for sure, when you have to stay up you need expert Premier players and surely Cahill is one of them.
If Sakho and Tomkins are fit I guess they'd be the ones playing, but since we're often short in CD due to injuries, I think he's a very good solution as a backup.

Cahill, can’t be the perfect signing, but if the club can’t afford to get near a perfect signing, then he is a sensible proposition.
Last season ,and the present pre-season, show how fragile what we have ,actually are. He has been there, done it. All we need is someone with some form. No one can easily predict when that’s going to be there, but Gary, has as much chance as a lot of the youngsters I see around the leagues.

You can afford to be over the top on wages though when there is no transfer fee. £70k per week over two years is still only about a £7.5m total outlay. Whereas buying somebody for £8m (which is dirt cheap nowadays) is already more expensive even if they were on wages of £nil.

It’s a good deal and we should get it over the line ASAP. Even more so if it allows us to cash in on say, Dann.

But the equation is incomplete if you ignore age. Max Meyer may have a resale value - whereas Cahill won't.

Gary Cahill, at 33, may be past his best for Chelsea but he's a quality, experienced centre back who can do a very useful job for us if we can complete this deal.
At his age, any sell-on fee after 2 years is unlikely, but he's being bought in to do a specific job for 2 years.
He only made a handful of appearances for Chelsea last season and I assume won't have had a proper pre-season so it's likely it will be a few weeks before he's ready for first team action.
I have a feeling that this coming season may be a challenging one for Palace and having a player like Cahill in the squad can surely only be positive.

If Riedewald or Dann are either sold or loaned will help with the 70k wages of Cahill

Breaking this cycle of signing these ageing players is unfortunately going to be like turnips cruise liner around with our finances the way they are. Oh and we’re signing these players on high wages to mount onto the ones we already have.
