Rudi - always one for a pedantic response.

Operations in an accounting view is the standard income and outgoings. Transfers would be deemed an one off expenses so is not operational.

By saying operationally we are fine means we can cover all standard outgoings with incomings i.e wages are covered by current revenue streams i.e we are not needing to sell players just to keep operating.

This is clearly better than our championship days when we lost money operationally almost every season

I know exactly what you mean and refer to as operations. Unfortunately football is very different and doesn’t survive on just revenue and usual costs without regular additions of players and the strategy and model of transfers and wages being in the equation.

Look at clubs that go down or Arsenal. It’s usually because something has gone wrong in their squad dealings. transfers may be one offs compared to high volume items like tickets, corporate hospitality, merchandise or food and drink but they are significantly important and are main drivers that keep us in the division to make the operational benefits possible.

Yes you are correct but this is football and being operationally sound is great on its own in the short term but that’s it, and even then you can still obviously get relegated. We could be on a tightrope again this season if this doesn’t end well. I still have confidence but how that’ll be soon we’ll see.

Just to weigh in on this operational profit/ costs debate, I have always thought we lag behind many clubs. Some of the Championship clubs have better infrastructure than us and there are even non-league sides with far better catering for the fans.
Just on a personal note - without looking at the accounts - when I attend away games I generally get a pre match or half time pint. I often buy the food at other grounds.
At Palace the standard is awful and I eat and drink before and after the match but never buy the food or drink. Even if I wanted to the queues put me off.
As for merchandise, I haven't seen much improvement since our Championship days. I believe Jordan got our stuff out across the usual high street retailers at one stage - so in a sense, we have actually gone backwards.

This season more than ever I think I'd have preferred the concrete certainty of some uninspiring but solid, make-up-the-numbers type signings sorted right at the start of the transfer window rather than another year of last minute, oh-sh*t-time-to-panic-and-scrape-the-barrel type signings right at the end of the window.

Hey ho. 'Twas ever thus.

This is made up of gate receipts 10.9, sponsors 9.4, other commercial 5.8 and 'other' income of 3.0 with broadcasting being 121.1

So over 80% of our income is from Sky and other TV/radio revenue.

Incidentally total wages were £117m

Thanks for that. not much left over for transfers !

oh yeah ,fcuk off brighton.

Seeing today that with Maguire off to Utd for 80m, Leicester are taking Lewis Dunk for 40m. That's all we need those pieces of driftwood on the coast having money to spend. They wont sod about and wait to the 11th hour of the transfer window.

Makes my blood boil that does! everyone saying Wilfs not worth 80 mill, everytime he plays against Maguire he turns him inside out its nearly embarrassing . i know different positions but still. Oh yea ( she said no Lewis ,she said no) He was one of their better players last season , cant see them doing much with 40 mill . w***ers!

Seconded entirely.

I know it is wishful thinking to hope this might be the case but not so once again.

I don't think many of us hold out for the 'Palace sign Messi' headline, but I think a genuine cause for concern is that we have had outgoing players with none coming in (including our best consistent performer last season). If we struggle most seasons, I can see this one being worse than ever.

I would much rather 4,5-6 steadyish, squad boosting/solidifying signings then 1 or 2 'bigger' signings I have to say.

I'm (hopefully) obviously not saying it's a choice of those two, we may have no choices at all for all I know. I tend not to believe that though and am trying not to be too pessimistic but a bit like others who have posted, that deadline day deal for nobody feeling is looming and not sitting well with me. Currently, my biggest hopes for next season seem to hinge on Max Meyer shining, Benteke coming back and Zaha staying and doing his usual!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Dunk could be sold at £45 million which is more than Arsenal apparently valued Zaha!
The market has gone crazy in this country and it is difficult to find value.
That’s why scouting is so key, and where we seem to fall down is on the overseas side and with the lower divisions here.
I hope we can bring in a couple of decent loans, retain the existing squad and that at least one of the current strikers come good.
Otherwise it could be a nail biting season.

i get what your saying but we dont really need any “make up the numbers signings” they would just be signings to appease fans with no patience and thats not a good way to go.

IMO if course, we should only be making signings this summer if they directly improve the starting 11.

Yeah, I don't think I was clear enough: I meant that I can see us scratching around at the end of the window for players of this ilk anyway, so in that case I'd prefer it if we at least signed them early so they had pre-season with us.

Thank goodness I am abroad and can only read this board every two or three days. It is absolutely the most depressing place to be, with so many supposed fans keen to spend someone else's money on anyone and everyone.

If the club was run by many of the regular posters on here we would be in the same condition as Bolton right now.

To join the other six nail biting seasons.
We are a mediocre PL team along with ten others.
All bitten nails together.
All teams have one or two players that the fans idolise and think better than anyone else.
I will be there along with everyone on here no matter what beef we have.
Bring it on.
