So if I had to rate the players today:

Guiata: 5 - made a major mistake coming for the ball that led to the first goal (although PVA was largely responsible), other than that had a decent game
Ward: 6 - I thought he looked decent out there
Kelly: 5 - Barely noticed him
Dann: 6 - Like Kelly, but he does win every header
PVA: 4 - responsible for the first goal, gave the ball away too much
Townsend: 6 - ran around a lot, had a nice shot in second half
McArthur: 5 - ran around a lot, unfortunate to deflect in the second goal, not much else
Luka: 6 - made a few decent tackles
Schlupp: 5 - also gave the ball away too much. I still don't see what Hodgson sees in him
Sorloth: 2 - Really pathetic. Perhaps the play that summarizes him up best was right before the half when he had the ball, ran into space then fell down as soon as defenders came close
Benteke: 3 - not much better than Sorloth - although will give him the benefit of doubt, as probably didn't go in hard for headers in pre-season, and only had Sorloth to head to
Meyer: 7 - my player of the game (if I had to pick one). Made a difference for large parts of the second half. Had some poor touches, but many more good touches.
Riedawald: N/A - looked okay when he came on, but too short of time to rate
Woods: N/A - almost had a good header, but too short to rate
Wickham: 7 - I know, the same time as the prior two, but I actually thought he looked miles better than Sorloth or Benteke. Although may be easier as he only played for 10 mins
Dryer: N/A - Think he had 1 or 2 touches

Hodgson: 3 - played way too defensive in most of the game. Allowed YB to control the game, by not challenging the defenders. It's pre-season, go for it!

Serious question: Has Sorloth ever made even a single play that suggests he has potential? A trap, a pass, a turn, a dummy; a shot or a header with power... I've simply never seen him make a move that suggests he might be useful. Baffling.

I’ve not been a fan of Meyer as I think for all his undoubted skill he gets muscled out too easily in the Prem, but he totally transformed it for us today when he came on in the second half. If this is a taste of things to come then I think we can regard today’s game as a success; especially if management have also drawn the same conclusions as the rest of us about Sorloth. 2/10 was generous. Swallow the loss, chalk it down to experience and move him on.

For about 30 seconds against Grimsby (whilst attacking the WHL end) he looked the part. He trapped the ball well and laid it off nicely and then took up a half decent position to receive the return ball.

Other than that he looked quite strong and almost ‘quick’ whilst warming up along the touch line in one of the games just before he went out on loan.

Read my post YT, the team we played today were not as you put it low grade opposition, they are the top Swiss side and do pretty well in the Champions League. We are not Champions League material... yet. Do a bit of research before you post.

On today's evidence, our scouting team might as well be on the pitch.

Maybe we should add Barry Bannell to our scouting team. He always had plenty of success against Young Boys.

Agreed.

I've seen them a couple of times when in Switzerland and they are a very decent team

He once scored against chelsea but it was called off from Reidewald playing the pass with a high foot. also completely ran over Moussa Dembele against spurs. other than these two moments no.

I accept that it's a pre-season knockabout, but it's nevertheless somewhat concerning that the team we put out - even though not our strongest - could be so poor against such low grade opposition.

Since when have Champions League teams been regarded as low grade opposition.
It was purely a fitness exercise in a meaningless game.

Would you say the same about Linfield and Dundalk too?

Why does that mean we have to play so poorly against them? We have just finished 12th in 'the best league in the world'. Are you saying that we are obliged to collapse into a heap of sh!t when confronted by a team that gets a regular run-out in the 'Champions' League?
