Fail to regain the Ashes you mean, Stirling. We lost them a few years ago.

The pessimism of England sports fans is so frustrating. Football and cricket in particular.

So much doom and gloom on this thread. Losing 1 wicket at the end of the day with a new ball is no disaster. The Aussie were two down at this stage in their first innings.

This summer we've won the cricket world cup and had the most dramatic ever win in our last match. We almost snatched an unlikely win from the jaws of defeat at Lords. Why do fans have no faith?

The bookies have the odds at evens currently for a draw - it's far from over. The wicket did very little yesterday for the seamers, hopefully more of that today. We have some quality batsman to come who on their day are well capable of big scores. Who knows what Roy's capable of against a soft ball?

Keep the faith boys!

Sometimes I wonder. I hope he proves me wrong.

It seemed a strange decision at the time and 497 runs later it still seems a strange decision. Someone also pointed out the Woakes had actually got Smith out 3 times in the series.

My faith has disappeared when Cumming took two important wickets in his first over.

Eight wickets to go and six hours to bat with no rain forecast. I can't see us pulling any more rabbits out of the hat.

The difference between the two sides is just one Australian player and just think what would have happened if Jack Leach had been just an inch further back when he "bowled" him

I think mine has too now. We were in the game up until 6:30 last night. Root and Burns were the two main men who could hang around.

Hope will be restored if we can get to lunch without losing a wicket. For some reason I am doubtful that Roy will be there for much longer.

If this is the case and we lose this test, I suspect he will be dropped for the final one.
I really cannot see us saving this test.

Not just Root and Burns - our batting at test match level is poor. We don't have batsman with the mental strengths of a Smith or Atherton, who can bat all day. And tactically we're inept - Root does not read the game well enough to be skipper.

The umpires were wrong to play in that light Burns and Root did not pick the ball up against the background.

The Aussies pace attack is the real difference here, we only have Broad of that standard.

We would rather have the World Cup I think, to win a series after that has been denied to others including Australia.

Every cloud.

To be fair England showed a lot of fight today and it will be interesting to see what changes are made to the team for the Oval.

I can't argue with any of that. The trouble is there has only been 1 round of Championship matches since the beginning of July. In the old days if a batsmen lost form they would be sent back to their county to try and find some. The last thing these guys need is more T20.
I watched Moeen the other night smash 120 odd off 50 balls hitting it to all parts. This guy is a fantastic talent yet when faced with a moving red ball is all at sea.
I think the likes of Dom Sibley are worth a look, but he's hardly hit a red ball in anger for a couple of months and in the one championship game he did play in August he was out cheaply in both innings.
The time to pick him was for the Ireland test to give him a chance.
