Conditions don’t get tougher than a swinging and seaming Duke ball at 90 mph which is what they have faced this summer.
Denly’s career average is no great shakes but he has got better with age and his stronger seasons have been the last few when run scoring has been much tougher due to the schedule for championship matches (albeit mostly in div 2). Ironically I thought he was a better white ball bat than red but I suppose we have plenty of those already! With the lack of viable alternatives I think another 50 at the Oval and he is on the plane.
As for a long term solution for no 3 god only knows.

Einstein said something like, 'the definition of madness is doing the same thing again and again, and expecting a different result'.

I think we know enough about all these current players.

It also makes it very difficult for players like Jason Roy to make the adjustments to his technique that he needs to do whilst facing Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc as he needs to do it back in County Cricket facing lesser bowlers

Truth is we just weren’t good enough. Even with the leg up of the ECB changing it’s rules to line up with ICC rules re who is eligible to play. So 3 years living here and you are in the team. Archer is the first player drafted in and certainly was one of our better performers. Inevitably, won’t be long before ‘England’ starts doing really well playing a whole load of new ‘citizens’
Call me old fashioned, but watching a West Indian playing for us just doesn’t seem right somehow even if it does improve our performance. It’s just ‘not cricket’.

It's been a long time since we had a team consisting only of pure bloods. Jason Roy and Ben Stokes who were probably our best players in the World Cup were born in South Africa and New Zealand respectively.

If the residency rules are now only 3 years, in another year we may see Morne Morkel in an England shirt

I agree, the positives are Archer and Burns. Root should not be Captain but I'm not sure who should. Bowling is just as big a problem as batting. Woakes seems decent to me - would rather move on from Broad and Anderson now as it is inevitable. Don't know why Woakes was dropped - rest maybe? Leach has done just about enough as a spinner but can hardly be considered world class.
Aussies would be questioning Paine too I guess. How long til Smith comes back?
Archer needs to be told to bowl as fast as he can like the old West Indies. He was much less dangerous bowling line and length and I fully blame the coaches and management for that. We have seen it several times before. Finn hitting the wickets on his run in springs to mind.
Bring in a West Indian fast bowler as bowling coach and get rid of the old school ties in the management team.

I didn't realise it was only 3 years. Simon Harmer at Essex must be on the radar even if he is in the twilight of his career (and has played test cricket for South Africa).

A passport doesn't make someone 'English' but in today's world it does make you eligible. Archer was born in Barbados and raised in the West Indies. He moved to the UK as a 20 year old.

Archer was on the path to playing for the West Indies up until a few years ago. He is no different to a Pieterson who took advantage of a one parent nationality to play for a country he wasn't raised in.

I have mixed feelings about it.....but he is certainly in the top five eligible bowlers in the English county scene.

Personally I don't see the point with continuing with players who have already shown that when the pressure is on.....they don't really have it.

But you never know, maybe you'll prove me wrong.

I think that you're right in that most of these players don't have what is required for test cricket. Whether that's their own fault or due to the coaching being tailored for the shorter game is a separate discussion. However, I don't think it's fair to bed new blood into a lose/lose situation before the whole set-up around test cricket and the priorities of the England team has been evaluated. If they're putting new faces in now they should have been brought in a test match earlier but you can argue that is partly aided by hindsight/what-might-have-beens

The Vunipolas in rugby were initially brought over by Wales. I find that hilarious. Hysterically so.
I'm going to revive this thread when Australia get their arses handed to them in the rugby and I don't mean league. I mean real rugby.
In the meantime, although I love cricket and the test game and will even watch a day of West Indies v SA, I doubt I will be watching our batsman fail again or our bowlers lose the plot in the next test.
Maybe the Aussies will make it more exciting with a few changes.
I have two predictions - a Warner century and an England batting collapses of epic proportions. Two in one series will be unforgivable and let us get rid of the sloggers and bring in some test players.

Yep. you just know that Warner is going to get some runs.

I think England are centrally contracted to have batting collapses so really it's just their job.
