Interesting debate following on from what has been an excellent and enjoyable summer of cricket. Shame I am not looking forward to next summer with so much relish with the Hundred making its bow. I haven’t spoken to anyone yet who is actually looking forward to its inception or can be bothered with it.
As for the England team I think all those that played yesterday have done enough to warrant a place on tour (most by the skin of their teeth). Butler should bat at 7 in the “Adam Gilchrist role” and be given the gloves. Bairstow should be told you are being played as a batsmen in the top 6 and need to score runs. If you don’t you are out.
Ollie Pope should be introduced to the team at 6 (and pray he is a huge success at we need someone else to be averaging near 50 in our batting unit). Sibley should be taken as cover for the openers. I would prefer Root at 4, however with the lack of viable options at 3 I think he has to stay there. Even though we drew the test series I still think there are more questions than answers with the makeup of the team.

Cant really argue with any of that. Would add in Foakes as a proper keeper in the squad too.

Yep, good suggestions from both of you.

Pope should probably have played this summer...Sibley has earned his tour place and I've always rated Hain.

As for Foakes, he never deserved to be dropped in the first place. He's made of the right stuff and has the talent.

Interesting debate re the wicketkeeper. Personally I think we have seen the best of Butler when freed up to tee off with the tail. For me his glovework is good enough and he should bat 7. If he doesn't bat 7 he's not good enough as a specialist batsmen to warrant a place top 6.
A couple of years ago Bairstow was only second to Root as a batsman. However his technique has flaws to the moving ball and he desperately needs to re discover his old form or he too is out.
Denly is vulnerable to the ball outside off. When he plays under his eyeline his technique is as good as anyone. When its a little wider he struggles. He needs to be more selective on what he leaves and let the bowlers come to him. But I like his guts, and patience. He could have a Chris Rodgers type of test career.
Burns has had an OK series and can be considered our premier opener now!

Unless it is restored to terrestrial I think cricket will not improve its audience.

Remember watching John Player League on Sundays, all the test matches and NatWest Trophy.

People are not going to have Pay TV just to watch the occasional cricket match.

Glenn McGrath saying the same in Oz...

As a kid I used to love watching the sunday league (especially as Kent were very successful during the 70's). I stopped watching once I started playing for the adults team at the age of 12/13.
Just chucking out there but football still seems to thrive with the majority of live matches on pay per TV, so how is it any different to cricket?
Although personally I find the money washing around in football obscene.

I recall the days when the only limited overs matches broadcast were on sundays between a county side and the ‘International cavaliers’ made up of a variety of players from different counties.

I would take a guess most football is watched in England on motd. Highlights only.
