Root needs to get back to scoring runs. He is a poor captain who certainly does not bring the best out of those around him. Trouble is what are the alternatives. Burns, Denly and perhaps Broad - none of which are guaranteed their place long term. I would not want to give it to Stokes as he is our best player at the moment. If he lost form then god help us. The cupboard is pretty bare.

For South Africa, Eoin.

It's an attritional game, you build pressure,
you don't take a swing like it's a 20 20, these one dayers can't play the game. Where the skipper had Jofra Archer bowling was ridiculous and he didn't change.

I keep hearing this...but I think that's only partially true. I don't think England are set up for attritional cricket...nor do I think they should try...when batting at least.

It's all about the talent of the player....it's about what that player is best at. Gower wasn't attritional nor Botham and Pietersen rarely so. Indeed, the great Australian sides of the nineties and 00s batted at an average of four runs an over as a standard against attacks better than modern fare.

If England want to play attritional cricket then then they are going back to the Hussain/Collingwood era and I have to be frank....I don't think we have enough of that culture of player in the county system to do it successfully......We don't produce Boycotts anymore we produce Sam Billings' clones.

We just saw Butler play defensively and get out for 0.....it isn't really his game.....If you play attacking players then that's how best they will perform.

I say play to your player's best strengths and accept what comes of that.

Interesting post. I suppose its more interesting to watch than the turgid affair we have had over the last few days. I just don't think we will win many games.

Quite, for me, there is some confusion in the England set up.

If they want to play attritional cricket then ok....pick that kind of player. I don't think it's where our strength lies but at least it would be consistent.

Telling attacking players to curb their game is like telling Hoggard to bowl at full pace instead of focusing on swing....He can do it....It's just not going to be using him most effectively.

When I see a bowler like Archer bowling at under 140 it just p1sses me off......He's a pace bowler...Bowl him in short spells and tell him to crank it up.

Just seen Root's interview after the game. Talk about deluded or what. This guy is out of his depth and has not only lost the trust and faith of the public but also his team (especially the bowling unit).

It is certainly refreshing to wake up on a Monday morning to an England batsmen scoring a double century. I have been critical of his captaincy and if there was a viable alternative I would relieve Root of those duties. However he is still, by some distance, our best batsman. Well played.

Ditto.

Archer has been a real disappointment on this tour.....well the bowling generally.
