Then why did the Americans buy in in the first place and why doesn't Parish sell out as there must be many willing billionaires willing to buy the club

I genuinely think the Americans screwed up when they bought. There have been lots of discussions on this Board about how little they knew about relegation etc, etc. They probably also thought that money was shared around equally in the PL. Hmmm, it ain’t nothing like the NFL.

With regard to SP, the trusting part of me says that he refuses to totally give up control of the club to someone who isn’t a supporter which I can understand and pretty much agree with.

In my opinion, the Americans miscalculated two big things: stadium redevelopment & Brexit.

That aside, I suspect they feel a mid table finish is realistic without significant spend. They are risk takers & perhaps willing to take that risk.

A better question is why they aren't investing far more to know the market? We clearly aren't fabulous in that regard.

The Americans miscalculated Brexit ? What’s that got to do with anything ?

They probably didn't love the slump in sterling. They keep score in dollars.

Beyond that, most serious international investors (right or wrong) tend to see Brexit as a source of negative uncertainty for their portfolios (if they have exposure to sterling-linked assets, that is).

I presume our lack of commitment in this window is the view that we are safe for another season.Would have been very interesting to have seen the scenario if we had 20 points and in danger of losing premiership status I'm sure parish would have dug deep then .very disappointing that we have little ambition than to be a mid to bottom outfit which I suppose was Roy's remit

I seem to recall that nine years ago when the gang of four rescued the club that they said they were unwilling purchasers and were only doing it as a last resort and would be custodians until a willing purchaser could be found.

It seems to me that three of the original four have stuck by their original promise and have either vastly reduced their stakes or sold out completely with only Steve Parish now seemingly happy running the club and wanting to hang on to his stake

That does all tie in with exactly how Jordan portrays Parish in his book. I suppose having been the CEO of an incredibly successful PR agency does give you the ability to spin any image you want.

I think Parish has done an OK job and we're undoubtedly in our most successful period. There have, however, been plenty of times where I've thought he's all fur coat and no knickers and the main attraction to him for running the club is the limelight and celebrity that he's achieved from it.

There’s an element of it being built on sand, what with all the high paid, experienced Prem players at signature, but that’s beginning to be addressed, because he has to, with these recent signings. Hopefully they’re better than Jach, Rakip, Sørloth etc etc.

Without Guaita and VAR saving and making us plenty of points we’d be in the exact danger you mention. When your goalkeeper is POTM nearly every month it tells the story.

See your back to your normal if and buts arguments that mean nothing Rudi.
Like Marco Silva is a great manager and didn't get Hull relegated really because all the games they lost under him they should have won. Then he went on to really shine at Watford and Everton, but I suppose all the games lost under him taking them on course for relegation were all down to bad luck.

Bad luck comes and goes, we have had a few VAR go against us as well this season and having a good goalkeeper in form is not against the rules.

Having a manager that gives the team a stable playing format to take advantage of the good form and any luck that comes our way is why we are where we are.

If Silva had proper defensive coaches he’d probably still be at Everton.

We’ve had more good fortune than bad on var. About time we had some luck our way, but it’s not a platform that the decision makers should take for granted as I’ll explain.

Of course a keeper is part of the 11 but when you’re among the lowest scorers, your keeper is player of the month almost every month and the richest club in the world is looking at him then it tells the story.

My point is that the financing and view of the US shareholders has us on a tightrope more than a criticism of Roy, who I think is mostly doing what he’s forced to in keeping a steady trickle of points coming in for a minimum return in his viewpoint. As many have said, a means to an end. My criticism is of the owners taking liberties with where we are currently and not what’s round the corner. Lack of backups has been an issue for years now and we’re (the US shareholders) lucky we’ve got to January without being in our usually precarious position when needing to spend more than we would’ve done in the first place in August, and possibly had more choice and less panic as well.

I have to say I agree with this, going along with the old saying of you make your own luck. Having a good goalkeeper is surely no different than having a good striker? Would Leicester be where they are without Vardy? VAR has helped us get the right decisions, with Villa being the only one where I think it was possibly wrong. Remember we lost our captain for three matches due to VAR and what seemed a pretty legit goal marked off for Zaha's armpit.

Edit: I also agree with Rudi about the club's failure to get adequate cover in the summer (and previous windows) though.

If again.
OK so why did he not identify the problem as good managers do and go and employ some defensive coaches?

Why has every team he has managed so far in the Premiership done well for 4 or 5 games and then spiralled downhill ?
Do you think it may be down to the fact he can't change things when he needs to and the players just lose faith in him ?

As for us being lucky to be where we are then so are Liverpool due to VAR and the fact Man City aren't too bothered this this season.
