I’m not totally anti-Hodgson.
In the past when fixtures didn’t clash with Palace I occasionally watched Hodgson’s Fulham.
He did a fine job there and they were quite entertaining to watch.
I also think he did a very good job in his first year at Palace.
This season I don’t admire his work, certainly from an attacking standpoint.
With the same squad as Hodgson has here I doubt say Rodgers or even Wilder would set up each game so defensively.
We have a good squad, albeit unbalanced in some respects.
I’m not saying he’s a bad manager but I do cringe when I hear him acclaimed as our greatest manager merely through keeping us up.
Pulls , for example,had a far inferior squad to work with.
Coppell built a team from nothing and took us from the Championship to third in the equivalent of the Premier League and the Cup Final.
People can feel free to disagree but I’m just trying to introduce some balance.

We appear this way because we fail to make the most of the opportunities we create, Benteke created for himself the perfect opportunity to score on 48' and mis*** the ball harmlessly into Henderson arms, should've at least forced a corner and a bit of excitement back in his direction from the crowd ..because this is what he desperately needs.

Not Hodgsons fault the faults of our attackers.

The bottom line is we are one of the worst teams in the league at home. We almost never win at home, almost never score at home.

Given that abject futility for two years now, you would expect a rational manager to try something, anything, different.

Say Roy went crazy, and started Riedewald, Meyer, Kouyate, Pierrick, in place of Luka, Benteke, McCarthy, McArthur.

What would the worst possible outcome have been? We would lose the match to Sheffield? Well we lost anyway, never came close to scoring a goal, and we lose every home match anyway. So WTF is the difference?

I'm sick to death of watching the same failure over and over. That is 100% on Roy.

If he ever tried different lineups or tactics, and nothing worked, then ok, you can blame SP and Freedman for the roster. Failing with the same thing over and over makes me question what value Roy is bringing to us at the moment.

Any of us can predict the lineups at this point, and we all know our only "strategy": Play for 0-0 the entire game, and hope for a lucky goal, usually from Zaha doing it all alone. The team doesn't seem to play hard, doesn't do well at set pieces. So what exactly are we paying Roy for?

2017 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Middlesboro
2018 Jan. (Sako) Palace 1 - 0 Burnley
2019 May (Batshuayi, Batshuayi, OG, Van Aanholt, Townsend) Palace 5 - 3 Bournemouth
2020 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Newcastle

seconded. if you have any doubt of roy's limitations as a good modern manager, just look at how he has handled the matches were we have ended up with a one man advantage when the scoreline was 0-0. what did genius roy tweak? yep, you guessed it, NUFFING! in fact we ended up being more under pressure from the man down team as they made tweaks to compensate for their numerical disadvantage!

me too, second that. It is easy to be an armchair manager, but seeing the same negative line up game after game - u know what u get even before kick-off.
Would also like to see the likes of Riedewald, Meyer and that young kid in starting line.
What do we have to lose?

Agree 100%. This is the cold fact of the matter, yet the RH apologists still find excuses for him. Good post!

No. Sahko was on loan under Big Sam and signed before Hodgson arrived.

That aside, he still inherited £25m Sakho and £10m Reidewald just before he arrived. Even though he's refused to play Reidewald

He also inherited the £45m worth of players BFS signed in the form of PVA, Schlupp and Luca.

We've not really made any sales under Roy either, Pardew sold Bolasie, Gayle, Jedi, and FFS. That probably came to £50m combined. Admittedly selling Murrey was a mistake, but at the time it was selling an aging player who hadn't played in 2 years for £6m. Most people on here would probably sell Wickham or Benteke for the same.

Roy's probably had the best squad available to any palace manager since the premiership began.

Homes games including last season up until now :

Games Played = 32
Goals Scored = 29
Goals Conceded = 36
Wins = 9
Draws = 9
Loses = 14

It always makes me laugh on the radio during the week ahead of the fixtures "X are away to Palace, Selhurst is always a tough place to go" - it is honestly the easiest ffs.

I honestly dread homes games, as we are just fairly useless and lack any plan B. We all know Meyer for McArthur is happening after 65 mins these days and that's about it.

We can pick the team for next week now, as Roy has no imagination or trust in other players.

Saturday was always the biggest away banker of the weekend on anyone's accumulator.

9 wins in 32 at home...

Just feels like we are sleepwalking towards relegation either this season or next.

I feel for Roy at times, but he also lacks the ability to recognise when changes are needed. Perhaps we could give the Townsend and Zaha front two another whirl to freshen it up, giving us Ayew and Benteke off the bench, just anything would do that is different !

We also can't play Ayew and Benteke if we only have two stikers, as we have nothing off the bench to change it.

If we miss the one or two chances we create per game, then we lose as other teams take theirs. It is turning out to be as simple as that.

I just wish we were proactive rather than reactive.

Roy's main aim seems to be to avoid embarrassment. He's like the teflon coated slopey shouldered project manager every office has. Spends his time not taking risks or sticking his head above the parapet and dodging any kind of responsibility. He can blame his failures on lack of transfers or injuries, when in reality he has one of our best squads and refuses to use some of the players we have signed for him.

Look at the difference between him and Southgate at England. In 2014 we limped out in the first round with Roy saying it was a hard group simply because Italy had a big reputation and Uruguay had a decent striker. Then constantly struggled against small opposition because he refused to attack them.

Southgate was constantly looking for any opportunities to make the england team and himself better. Against weaker teams like Paraguay he barely played a defence. Southgate isn't a great manager either but tries to evolve, his biggest mistake was probably not changing a winning team. Roy refuses to change a losing formula.

Yes, these were my thoughts also. RH inherited some decent players, many of international standing. Why we play in the negative manner we do with the accompanying lack of goal threat only he can answer.

The RH '' apologists '' need do nothing other than refer his critics to the facts - league positions attained , points won and the budget constraints he has to work with.

This thread has run it's course because it's the same old debate going around and around....I'm going to try and resist posting in it again !
