Maybe if she charges us to get in, she can try to recoup some of that 7% deficit she's running (highest in Europe, and well outside the limits for EU membership)

I read they are considering reducing the speed of HS2 to try and stop the costs escalating, so you probably wont get there much quicker anyway.

Well they are already out of control, who would pay 56 billions plus to rip up and re-place a railway line, at the cost of other necessary improvements to the UK railway system that would give far more benefit.

You despair of any reason or rationality, it is as though the UK is unable to think anything through.

You may well ask what benefit is HS2 anyway?

Does it connect to Heathrow, Europe, things modern Britain needs?

No, it connects to Euston.

Enjoy your time-saving - you will be able to use the tube just like everybody else.

I find myself in the awkward position of agreeing with you 100%.

I'm off for a lie-down.

Scrap it, suck up the sink-costs (dreadful as they are), ensure the consultants are never retained by HMG ever again. Next steps:

Consultants fees are more likely to be a result of civil servants not making make their minds up and coming up with stupid processes to justify their own existence. Consultants come and go all the time, civil servants are unsackable.

If the politicians who ran this country acted like adults this would not be necessary. Infrastructure is a long term investment whereas politicians are only thinking about this week.

A sensible policy would be to have a infrastructure committee with experts nominated by all the major parties. They would plan for the future with the parties agreeing in principle to the plan. The only thing the politicians would then do is decide how much and how quickly to adopt the plan. So maybe in times of austerity they slow it down or speed it up but the plan is the same.

Fat chance any of this happening.

If they are estimating £56bn then you know it's going to cost at least twice that. We have a nation debt of £1.8 trillion mostly thanks to Tony Blair and unless we want the economy to implode then we need to take drastic steps to reduce this. This one is a no brainer.

Funny how the Victorians could do this and more easily. And entrepreneurs would pay for it.

Plough money into the aforementioned Northern Powerhouse lines, AND a rapid high-freight-volume connection between Tyneside and Liverpool.

Then establish free ports in both. State aid in both regions to kick start industry and economy feeding off the Free ports. Ensure all bidding contractors will use UK labour as much as possible.

All possible if we leave the EU. Not possible (as under the Withdrawal Agreement) if we're told we can't diverge from their "economic model", subject to their state-aid rules, customs union and procurement diktats.

The south has had enough money pumped into it. It's time we re-balanced this country.

This...and include Hull in the mix

Far fewer properties to purchase, smaller cities to pass through and fewer landowners to deal with - most of whom were only too pleased to have this wonderful new (as it was then)means of speedy, safe transport.

it was meant to be running reasonably close to where i live & mainly people were up in arms due to house prices going down, however. i have heard about properly being brought for 500% of its prices...reeks of gordon drowns great british gold sale in reverse.
