At this point I genuinely don't understand why we're not putting most of our eggs in the academy basket seeing as we clearly don't want to spend any money. I've looked enviously at Chelsea this season who have integrated three academy prospects into their first team and watched them score every one of their league goals so far. Granted they had little option due to their transfer ban but we've pretty much had a self-imposed ban for the last couple of seasons. Instead of spunking another £30m on a Benteke, imagine what you could do to the academy for half of that money and the rewards it could potentially reap. Our best two players in the last ten years have both been academy products and will eventually be sold for a combined fee of £130m+. We must have one of the oldest average first teams in the league and it really feels stale at times. There are definitely positions (forward, wings, full backs) where we need reinforcements so I really don't see the harm in testing some academy products there. Unfortunately, I feel it would take a manager who isn't scared to try them there unless his hand is forced (AWB). Don't know about you lot but I would be far more forgiving about us losing games if there were enthusiastic youngsters in the team giving it a go. People always go on about the incredible size of our catchment area, time to test it.

Completely agree - if Shaw did mean that none of our U23s will ever get into our first team then that is a sad indictment of our club. Perhaps he meant that chances were slim of them getting in rather than that they weren't good enough - it can't have helped Dreher, Flanagan and Kirby when we signed two more CMs in the summer.

A guy I work with is semi pro and in his mid 20's - He is of the opinion that there are hundreds of young players good enough to play in the Premier League (himself included - I don't believe him), but they simply don't get a chance. He played against AWB in a pre season friendly at the start of last season and claims to have bossed him and won a penalty off him. My point is that I believe him to an extent and AWB is an example of someone who got a game due a freak injury list and 18 months later was bought for £50m by one of the biggest clubs in the world. If Ward didn't get injured he'd probably be in the academy still or loan to a league 1 club. I remember seeing Hirem Boateng come on near the end away at Swansea about 3 years ago and thought he was awesome, but we never really saw him again. I can't think of any youngster at Palace who's played in the first team and really looked out of their depth. We're established now and are not realistic relegation candidates. Its about time we stopped buying journeymen on high salaries like McCarthy and Cahill (played well to be fair) and started to promote some youth into the first team.

People always go on about the incredible size of our catchment area, time to test it. Money is being invested into the Academy so that it can achieve Category 1 status. Having better facilities doesn’t come with any guarantees but will at least get the club closer to competitors for young players. You reference Zaha and AWB as examples of what an academy can produce. But then look at the time elapsed between the two - nearly ten years apart ! My point being that there are no guarantees or quick fixes here. Moses and Clyne also graduated of course but in times where the route to the first team was more quickly achievable . You are advocating sticking youngsters into the first team for the sake of it. Not factoring in whether they are ready , good enough or better than the senior pros being selected. That’s just unrealistic at this level. Or even further down the leagues , look at Bolton - forced into playing kids that aren’t really up to it . Yes, Chelsea have got three former youth team players in their side currently but that club has formerly been no friend of developing young talent and indeed their transfer ban is in relation to breaking rules involving signing young foreign players under the age of eighteen.

There’s a world of difference between getting a chance in the first team and actually holding down a regular place. Yes, Boateng looked decent when he came on.....where is he now ? How about John Bostock.....looked to have it all but had his head turned.... It is harder than ever for a player to come though the ranks into the first team, not just at Palace. But if they are good enough and their coaches - the likes of Richard Shaw - push the Manager - then they may just get a chance. From reading the interview with Shaw it appears that in his view he doesn’t have a player that he can put forward for first team consideration

It's no good giving someone 20 minutes, they need at least 5/6 games to see if they can swim. All Premier League teams would rather pay big bucks for an unknown foreign player then risk a youngster. Hence why all our decent youngsters are now playing in the Bundesliga. Bostock would have made it if he'd stayed at Palace rather than stunting his growth chasing the big money at Spurs.
