Do we need a seperate home and away formation?

We know Roy is quite a conservative manager but maybe now we need to consider being a bit more attack minded at home. Home form has been an issue for the last 5 or so years so it is clearly not just an issue that Roy has faced, Pardew in particular struggled to find a decent system to use at home. The current system with 3 hardworking, but uncreative midfielders (Luka,Kouyate and Macca) has served us well away but at home it is so predictable. Additionally, Wilf is a peripheral figure so is not having enough impact - how many home goals has he scored in the last 3 or so seasons? I think it's about 2!! Could we play a 442 (or 424) with 2 up top and Wilf and Townsend on the wings? Or if not use a proper No 10 ahead of 2 holding midfielders. Roy moans we struggle to score goals but then lines us up in the most defence minded formation week in week out. Also set pieces - why can't we defend them? We look so vulnerable whenever the ball is in our area, yet when attacking we look pretty clueless. Do we not practice these routines?? Surely something needs to change when we are at home, at least against non top 6 teams. Thoughts??

Roy is a one trick pony with massive limitations but unfortunately, much like the players we can bring in, we have to settle for bargain bucket Managers also. Just think about what we really need from a style perspective to push on and you don't need to look further than yesterday's opponent Brendan Rodgers. Palace and Leicester are similar in size (the recent Prem title aside) but we all know Rodgers wouldn't leave Celtic for us but would for Leicester. We set our own bars and limitations from the Chairman down. So from that perspective, we can't do better than Roy. A Manager that will get us 40 points, mostly on the road and keep our thin squad ticking over. However, on the off-chance a 72 year old man wakes up tomorrow like Scrooge on Christmas willing to change his ways, I'd love to see a new thing at home. The main thing for me is we can't do much worse at home over the last 2 seasons anyway. It's turgid and boring and doesn't yield many points, so I don't really care if we lose most of our home games, it won't make much difference. Would love to see Camarasa or Meyer in for one of the 3 straight away. Townsend right and Zaha left and asked to stick to his wing position where he gets more time and freedom. Stick Luka in front of the back four and let everyone else roam forward. In situations like yesterday when one of our ONLY TWO wingers at the club are injured, play Schlupp left back and PVA left attacking without having to track back so his defensive limitations aren't exploited as much and it means we still have 2 proper wingers rather than Jimmy bloody Mac on the right wing. A nice thought but nothing will change.

IMO a decent proposition. I am not so jaundice about Roy (or the Board) as others are but I agree Roy is conservative in his approach. It has served us well and that is not to be forgotten. The fact he is 72 is irrelevant (I say this having supported Palace since the early 60s). Palace play counter attacking football which is counter to what is needed when playing at home when we need to exert more pressure and be more attacking. Recently we have let in silly goals from set pieces but it is worth remembering we have one of the stingiest defences in the EPL - admittedly that bit less good given the last three games. But at home the midfield needs to be more creative and the inclusion of one or two from Meyer, McCarthy and Camarasa would be good. Certainly worth a try. I have been impressed by Meyer in that regard and I feel he needs more game time to really show us his quality. No doubt the same could be said for the other two. Mind you we could also do with a 15 goal a season striker!!! Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

You have to take Roy warts and all .

I would presume that different games need different tactics and formations. Not really as simple as home and away. When Roy gets stick about his team selections he does a mad selection Everyone wanted Meyer to start for weeks last season, week after week. Obviously we all meant at home to a team we will need to open up. but no Roy chucked him a start at Burnley away (I think or something similar)...not the game for Meyer. He struggled , Roy can then leave him out of the side I can see a team selection like that away at Chelsea this weekend...Camarasa or Meyer start...It�s what Roy does..
