I'm planning on moving to Montreal within the next two years. Any thoughts, especially on living there vs (south) London? And is there a Palace fan group there?

Great city! Loads of fun, lots of parties and a decent rock scene.

Do you speak French, you'll probably need to? You'll also have to pretend that cheesy chips and gravy is some sort of french delicasy and not a late night snack for piss heads.

Found a sports bad whilst I was there, the barmaid was Canadian but hated Brighton as that's where her ex was from. If you are going out, best way is to just find a sports bar, sit at the bar, and see if the people next to you are talkative.

The French Candian's can be a bit odd and do what independence. Jacques Catier, founder of Quebec is from St. Malo in Britanny. The architecture is the old town reminded me a bit of a bigger version of St Peter Port in Guernsey just a short hop from St. Malo. Interesting, the Breton's what independence from France, as they see themselves as Celts not French, but their descendants on Quebec want independence from Canada because they see themselves as French not Brits.... everyone seems to want independence for independence sake at the moment.

I've been several times and my partner is from there so I know quite a bit about the place. How long were you there for and why did you leave (assuming you have).

The 'soccer culture' is different but in a way better than here. there's no history, the clubs are all 20-30-40 years old, football is still seen like a hipster sport, but there are lots of Europeans there and Serie A is just as important if not more important than EPL. People are also relaxed about the whole thing so that helps.

My brother-in-law has been living there for the past 46 years. He doesn't speak a work of French and this has caused him no end of problems. So as to avoid ending up in court (again) he has had to hire Canadian French speaking employees to answer phones and deal with customers. Family circumstances dictated that he moved to Montreal but I think if he had his time again he would have preferred Toronto. Having said all that,he has mad a pile of money.
I personally like the city but I have seen a certain amount of decline since the PQ (Parti Quebecois) took control.

yes, but there's lots of jobs in English as well. French is essential in customer service and government jobs, not my line of work anyway. My conversational French is OK, but my writing is probably at the level of a 5 year old. I can also work remotely.
