Having said all that,he has mad a pile of money. the official language is French, so it is essential in business/dealing with the state etc. To not learn a word in 46 years is... well, I won't judge, I don't know the whole story. Also, you can't really enjoy all the city has to offer (restaurants, events etc.) if you don't speak the language at all. At the same time, MTL is truly bilingual and most people in the city speak both perfectly and don't mind Franglais - a mix of French and English oftentimes in the same sentence. PQ is not great, and hopefully by the time I'll get there they'll be out of power.

yes, but there's lots of jobs in English as well. French is essential in customer service and government jobs, not my line of work anyway. My conversational French is OK, but my writing is probably at the level of a 5 year old. I can also work remotely. I worked for Petro Canada and everything had to be in English and French, no helpful software back then sadly.
