You could say that most popular acts are overrated depending on what criteria you are judging them.

I always thought that the hype around Lou Reed and Velvet Underground was vastly disproportionate to the talent.

Most songwriters have only got a few good songs in them so they produce a lot of mediocrity and most popular musicians are not that great.

All just a question of personal taste really.
You cant make someone like a particular song let alone an artist.

The Beatles are an overrated early covers band that were runners up in a talent contest. Luckily for them the winners could not take the prize so The Beatles went of to Germany instead. How many songs can you have with the word Love in the title. Now the Rolling Stones were true musicians before the Beatles with a great love of the Blues (And loved a cover version) 1962 to present

As for Paul Weller he is a God that has lasted over 4 decades, inspired generations and created and influenced youth sub cultures. With ever evolving music. Lyrics that poets would die for and chord progressions that composers can but dream about. He is certainly underrated I may be a bit biased As I think the man is a God

PS I don't mind the Beatles (Paul Weller loved them and plagiarised them) but its always fun winding up Beatles fans

Sorry but I can never let it pass when some says the Beatles were overrated.

I am not saying everyone need has to necessarily like their music ( although I find it strange, considering their huge output, that anyone could not cannot find some stuff they like) but to say they are overrated is to completely overlook what they did and the effect they had on popular music.

When the Beatles arrived in January 1963 with Please Please Me they had a monumental impact on the music scene and paved the way for all the other "beat groups"that followed. Prior to 1963 the charts were pretty anodyne with ballads, watered down rock & roll, novelty records and instrumentals. Prior to the Beatles the group concept, something we take for granted now, of performers playing instruments and singing hardly existed.

The emergence of The Beatles was like a bright light being switched on after the dull and turgid state popular music had descended into . They looked different, their sound was fresh and immediately engaging, they wrote their own music ( at least their singles), and turned the whole music scene upside down. Many existing artists suddenly found themselves redundant with their musical style rendered out dated at a stroke.

One of the most impressive things about them was that they never became complacent. They were innovators always leading the way be it in their song writing, imaginative use of instrumentation, lyrics, album cover design, playing live in stadiums, and much more.

Perhaps it would be stretching it to say that music today wouldn't be what it is without The Beatles, but they provided the springboard for what followed and opened up new horizons for fellow artists.

Okay, so their early releases likes of She Loves You may sound a bit simplistic now, but you have place what they did in the context of the period - 1963 ( and indeed 1970 when they split) were very different times from 2019.

I rest my case m'lud.

ps I do agree with you regards Paul Weller

The Smith's are the most overrated pile of crap ever. Voice like nails on a blackboard the only music I turn off detest them with a passion just dont get it. I should like them because I like songs with story telling lyrics but really dont.

Respectfully disagree. Johnny Marr is an unbelievable guitarist and Morrissey, whilst i admit is a prick these days has some of the best lyrics ive ever heard, relatable, thought provoking and funny often in the same song.

As I said I should love them I Have really tried to like them but can't, which is a shame as I do like Johnny Marr but it is just Morrissey and that awful voice maybe he should have stuck to writing if his ylrics are that good and not singing

Surely when a band first forms and starts out it is never overrated when they truely wished they were?
It only aquires that status in some quarters when they have made it in some way, have some status, a back catalogue and a few fans!

I've never understood why the Beatles were so big there were a lot better songwriters and musicians around at that time, as for Paul Weller, I really like The Jam but his solo stuff is extremely boring and self indulgent, and I've seen him in concert twice and no one seemed to really enjoy it, and also without the Beatles there would be no Oasis and Gallagher brothers !

Love songs, to sell records to ditsy teenage girls.

The early Beatles were just a boyband.

But like the Beastie Boys, they eventually learned to make some decent music.

Classical music is mostly alien to young people. Surely the biggest Underrated mistake ever.

Overrated REM and Radiohead both these bands could have released botty burp noises and Q magazine would still give them 5 stars
