Decent series on the whole. Crawley & Sibley may have caused a selection headache when Burns returns. Ollie Pope looks like he could be the next big thing. Dom Bess was a welcome surprise and will be important in Sri Lanka. For me, the only blip was Joss Buttler. I think his time is up now and Foakes will be in the starting 11 for the next Test. Denly did quite well but the big score still eludes him. I think he's under pressure now and needs to get some big scores against Sri Lanka to keep his place. Crawley/Sibley will possibly replace him at 3.

I'm no Tory but you have to admire the current administration for being able to address these ills and achieve such a turnaround at such sort notice.

On the flip side, however, I do hope our thrilling rediscovered steely societal resolve doesn't hurt our white-ball game which obviously benefits hugely from being able to select from sappy lily-livered types.

There is no doubt that one day and 20/20 is far easier for batsmen with the bowling and fielding restrictions and you only have to look at Jason Roy's word class performances in the shorter versions of the game and his failures in test cricket when bowlers can bowl properly as proof. The rise of the IPL is also harmful to the longer format as people can swat the ball around for a few overs and earn a small fortune which reduces the incentive to try and excel at "proper cricket" The BCCI is too powerful in the world game due to their huge financial contribution and whilst they attract huge audiences to the IPL by employing all the best players from around the world they won't reciprocate and allow Indian players to play in other country's 20/20 competitions which I think is wrong. And then we have Kolpak which allows the English counties to pack their teams with South Africans which again hinders the development of English players. I have been very critical of Hampshire who have far too many Kolpak Saffers in their squad and am rather annoyed that yesterday my own team (Durham) have signed a couple of saffers themselves. Perhaps the ECB should restructure the funding of county cricket so that the funding is only available for English qualified players in each side.

In Durban right now on a golfing holiday. Went to the 20/20 this evening. Very exciting. Had a good laugh with the locals, fair bit of banter. They were keen to shake our hands and congratulate England on a tight win at the end.
