This isn’t the family silverware. You do know this is a private company right?

I don't quite know how to respond to this without sounding irritable.

So I'll just give you the link to the Cobham PLC shareprice on the LSE.

As you will have seen, the originating family does not approve of the deal. See the quotes from Lady Nadine Cobham.

UK companies, in my opinion, are the family silver.

Indeed. Business is littered with companies where the founder is no longer in charge of the company they started.

Hardly a surprise it must be upsetting for the family. However they had the chance to put together a rival bid and didn't so I don't blame the shareholders.

If Simon Jordan complained about the new Palace owners whoever they are I think most of us would say sorry Simon you had your time and unless you have a rival bid it's just words.

When Harold Macmillan used the phrase "The family silver", it was clear to everyone that he was referring to the sale of state-owned industries. To suggest otherwise, as you do, is perverse.

Hmm, can't say I remember Harry that well. I wasn't quoting him you know.

Of course it doesn't matter who owns the businesses that dominate our lives. Everyone is equally trustworthy. Simply sell to the highest bidder, they won't strip UK assets and take them offshore. Why would they.

I'm mixed with this.

Maple's original post has a point, however Hrolf's reply about the pick and choosing on foreign matters was also salient.

I'm not comfortable with us having Chinese or even French involvement with our nuclear industry and this is just another jab in that general direction.

Macmillan was right about the 'family silver' (though it's correct that this referred to state ownership).

The type of neo liberal conservatism that views everything as a commodity hasn't served us well. I'm with the original owners on this issue.

But I'm also very pro US....regardless of who the president is. The US themselves would never do this kind of thing.

Oh dear, oh dear. Sarcasm - the last resort.

Not for the next 5 years I'd guess.
