I don't though think we just "leave them alone". It's a question of minimising and containing the attacks, which will only be worse if tensions are deliberately inflamed. We clearly need to maintain our alertness, use the very effective monitoring and security systems we have set up and take covert action in times of extreme threat.

Of course no total guarantees are available which will completely assure that a nuclear weapon isn't developed but we have become much better at the way the responsible agencies inspect and monitor things these days. From all I know the agreement the west had made with them was holding but is now threatened.

None of us know what our security forces know so second guessing what the strategy ought to be is all rather speculative. What troubles me is when it appears that Trump is more concerned about securing his own future than on how his actions actually play out in the middle east.

None of us do know what the security forces know.
Is the correct answer, hence why condemning this killing is folly if you dont know.
What if we, the uk were in line for an attack from Iranian linked terrorists.
Trump could well have saved lives over here.
Some anti Trump people will never see good in anything he does and for whatever reason.

I gave you the reason when I said it "appears" that Trump's motives are domestic and I don't see any reason yet to alter that view.

That he, and his spokespeople, are claiming there was knowledge of imminent attacks doesn't mean there was. It all looks as though this was an opportunity grabbed by instinct rather than a carefully prepared long term strategic move.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

I agree on the concern that trump is acting on this for his gain but you simply cannot he sure of it.

BBC website....

An airbase housing US troops in Iraq has been hit by rockets, according to the US Department of Defence.
Iranian state TV says the attack is a retaliation after the country's top commander Qasem Soleimani was killed in a drone strike in Baghdad on Friday, on the orders of US President Donald Trump.
The Al-Asad base has been hit by multiple rockets.
The White House is monitoring the attack.
It is unclear if there have been any casualties.
"We are aware of the reports of attacks on US facilities in Iraq. The president has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely and consulting with his national security team," White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the attack was in retaliation for the death of Soleimani.
"We are warning all American allies, who gave their bases to its terrorist army, that any territory that is the starting point of aggressive acts against Iran will be targeted," it said via a statement carried by Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.

We have literally no evidence of this though?

All we have to go on is the historical precedence of US intervention abroad...

Korea: killed 4 million and partitioned a region which lasts till this day led by a madman.

Vietnam: killed many more million, dropped more bombs than during WW2, agent orange, human rights abuses etc.

The Gulf War: trained up the mujahadeen, who spawned most of the terrorist cells who attacked the West subsequently.

Iraq: lied to the public, destabilise a nation, annulled their democratic vote and killed hundreds of thousands.

Afghanistan: killed hundreds of thousands, failed to get rid of the Taliban, missed out on capturing al quaida leaders, remain stationed in the country even today.

Syria: opened the door to genocide of the Kurds, Assad remains in power, tens of thousands more killed.

Who are the terrorists here?

You just don't get it....it's like you still believe in cowboys and indians.

There are no good and bad guys. There is only perspective.

Give me one example of where American intervention abroad has been positive since world war 2.

Again, you aren't getting it....perspective.

Still, ok, let's play this childish game.....From my perspective:

The stationing of troops in Europe to deter the Eastern block.

The Korean war, the Vietham war. The first Iraqi war....the Serb/Bosnian war.

And I support the Afghanistan war as a necessary response from the US and to a lesser extent even UK perspective.
