An astute signing. Gives Roy a selection problem, but one I suspect he's happy to have. Luka needs to up his game.

its all relative, innit.

we paid £3m for the guy, who had been injured for a few years and needed to get back to fitness, given evertons spending whilst he had been injured that seems a fair price.

i like him, he is a ball winning tenacious midfielder, who does have decent distribution and he works hard for the team.

he has fire in his belly and is up for the scrap, which lets make no bones about it, fits the club perfectly...which as a team mate you love to have that player lining up next to you.

we chastise watford for being a nasty team but you need that to survive in this league and he adds that.

would i start him above kouyate when everybody is fit? no, but im happy to have him & he cost is diddily squat.

to add to this, and this isnt based afted todays game...our midfield options sit at...

jimmy mac
jimmy mac
kouyate
luca
meyer
schlupp
jairo
banks

considering we now have 8 players for 3/4 slots, 3 of them are versatile, personally im very happy with our options.

if a reasonably priced attacking playmaker came up then thats a good idea but normally they cost fortunes, so we need to find our way to goal another way.

I know how Roy plays and that he uses 3 central midfielders. I just don't think it's a good way to play. I'm writing this as we drew 2-2 away at Man City, so I'm going into the lion's den, but in the long term, I think it's horrible to be the team with least goals scored in the Premier League. It may very well get us relegated in a relatively short period, just as WBA got relegated after they had finished 7th the previous year with the best defense. Stoke never recovered and started scoring after the Tony Pulis period either. Burnley had the best defense in the PL 1-2 years ago and now they're almost down.

Youngsters need to be taught that they have to score 3-4 times in a match. If they become accustomed to defending a lot and having just 2 chances per game....they will never recover scoring form. The more chances you make in a game, the better your players will become with time. The more goals the attacking players score, the higher their price goes. So, even in case of less points, you still get to be more financially stable, cause you sell at a higher price.

He may be good, but the point is there are too many purely defensive midfielders.

1 starter is enough. With 1 backup. And the other one should be someone like Jimmy Macca or Cabaye, more attack minded.

So, if we like McCarthy so much after the City game, let him or Kouyate start and sell Luka.

2 of them starting at the same time will still mean we're one of the poorest teams in terms of scoring, if not THE poorest.

But we just drew at Man City and are 9th, Brighton are playing a more expansive game, where are they?
I would like us to play a more attacking entertaining style but what we are doing is working at the moment

It worked for WBA, Stoke or Burnley "at the moment". But then..?

Basically, Stoke and West Brom did the same thing. They wanted a better display of football, like many on here, including you, and sacked the manager..... Tony Pulis

Not sure why Burnley are so sh!te, but they can fcuk off anyway! Nobody likes them

Whilst I sort of get where you are coming from I agree that we could do with a more attack minded and creative midfielder and most on here would agree with you. I do not think we are a Stoke, WBA or Burnley we are a Palace . McCarthy cost very little and is able to contribute as well as anyone in our midfield and as such is a great squad player in our set up. Your desire for a different midfielder should not label McCarthy as not worthy of being in our squad as it is. What you are really indicatingI think , forgive me if I am wrong, is that you would prefer us to be playing in a different style with different players but as we are not please don’t judge McCarthy in a system we do not play.
McCarthy fits our system COYP

From my point of view, it was Tony Pulis that got Stoke and WBA relegated, not that they replaced Tony Pulis. He was last when he got fired from WBA, so if they got relegated after that, it's on him too. And Stoke never really recovered after he was forcing his players to be so defensive. Sure, Mark Hughes had some years, but he was not really an improvement as manager.

Pulis went to Middlesbrough too and, even though they were one of the most powerful teams in the Championship on paper and were trying to get a promotion, they had the worst goal tally from the Top 8, failed to gain that promotion and eventually sacked Pulis after a series of bad results too. Now they will have to wait years for a new manager to fix what Pulis did.

Chelsea is a good example of how defensive tactics damage a team but how you can come out of it. Conte gave them a title but 3 bad years after that. Basically, they let the "young blood" and talented players roam free and play attacking football, so now we have Mount, Abraham, Pulisic, Hudson Odoi, Batshuayi, Barkley, Loftus Cheek (when he's not injured) instead of Giroud, Bakayoko, Matic, Pedro, Moses.

I'm not against McCarthy himself and I think that if he plays like this, then he really proves himself. I'm just saying I wouldn't keep all 3 of Kouyate, McCarthy and Luka in a 25 men squad.

Hard to chose though. Kouyate has probably been the best. McCarthy has been good for his price. Luka has been captain (penalties don't count). But he is 28 already and maybe if a 20 million offer would come, it would be good to let him go, cause it will not happen after 30.

I haven’t rated him that much.... until today.

Watch a replay, he covered DeBreyne all game, plus attacking during the breaks. His best game as a palace player by far.

Just watch off the ball, he was never more then 3 yards off DeBreyne.

We are different. We survived Pulis. We don't have Chelsea's finances or acadamy.

I think that our injuries of late have forced the way we have played on us.
McCarthy will be better as we get stronger now he is fit.
With Tosun now able to be a focal point he will blossom.
The way he won the ball an set Wilf off yesterday was brilliant!
