This maybe covered in another thread (and if so, sorry Mods), but Tuesday night was another in a number of games this season where players - who can shoot/score from distance - have passed up the opportunity.

We seem to have a mentality of needing o pass the ball into the net rather than occasionally taking a shot - even if it leads to a corner, it's a better result than running into a defender and them clearing the ball.

Hopefully with Luka back (assuming he gets back in the team AND ups his performances) he might try a couple, but WTF won't McArthur or Kouyate have a pop? We seem to practice a lot before the game and then lose the will once in the heat of the action.

Whilst generally agreeing with your sentiment, I have seen Kouyate have pop on a few occasions and I don't think any were on target - better left to others.

Yogi’s was a cracker. John McCormick belted one in that game too.
Ambrose at Man U was a beezer of a shot.

Speaking of which, Jimmy Mac keeps missing chance after chance, usually from inside the box. He can't even get in a decent shot. Did it again v Southampton in second half. True, he wasn't outside the area, he was somewhere near the six-yard box.
I will probably get told off for speaking off the subject, even though I tried a neat link at the start.

John "Yogi" Hughes, Colin Taylor, Cliff Holton. The safest place to stand was right behind the goal because those three could really hit a ball and if it missed the goal watch out. Ct once scored a screamer from 40 yars out against Leeds.

I didn't see Holton play, but the other two could certainly strike the ball.

However, the balls used then and those used today are vastly different.

Today's are like beach balls in comparison - I wonder how they would have got on with them....

The goal against City was a cracker, but I also think Andros's strike away at West Brom last season was superb - he ran from our own half, cut in and delivered a fantastic shot from outside the area. Obviously, because of the context, not remembered in the same way as the City goal.

Coutinho's available

Didn't Townsend score from outside of box against Norwich this season? or was it just inside?, can't remember

I might be a tad awry with the figures but a while ago I perused some stats concerning where goals are scored from on the pitch.

I believe some 20-25 yards from goal in a central position about 3% of shots result in goals and further back the figure is 2%.

Two edges of the sword. Because we earn so few chances near the edge of the box, the players are probably wary of "squandering" them by shooting from distance. But because we earn so few chances near the edge of the box, we fans wish we would fire away.
