Telegram going into meltdown

It’s a beautiful thing to watch in real-time

Some people realising they’ve been had, others venting at youtubers (good, monetising fake news pricks), some saying keep the faith.

The best bit is some are now saying Biden was in on it all along and will now ‘pull the trigger’. Then others are piling into them as a result.

The panic and infighting is simply glorious.

At least most of them now seem to be waking up, or ‘awake’ as Matthau would put it. Stupid is as stupid does, I suppose

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

Also forgive me, if I disregard what you...a rampant activist Democrat, thinks about what conservative values should or shouldn't be.

Maine can speak for himself but if I were American I would be attracted by a party that offers strong fiscal restraint the fostering of entrepreneurship low taxes and otherwise reduces bureaucracy and stays the feck out of your personal life.

However I wouldn't touch the Republicans with a ten foot pole while they seek to appeal to the evangelical right start fights with pushover minnows to show how tough the US is (and justify an absurd defence budget - one area where I back trump) and stuff prisons with slave labour poor without providing the resources to house prisoners in a way commensurate with a civilised modern state just to show how tough they are on crime

Trump stablised the foreign policy mess that Obama left him. He was the first president to try with North Korea and he ended with a reduction in tensions...something Obama couldn't do.

He tried to bring all the troops home but the deep state actually worked against that and lied to him....boasting about it in his last few days.

While Trump was there neither China nor Russia became bold militarily. Lets see how that goes with Biden.

The situation with Iran is certainly not more stable than it was when Trump took office. The Saudi-Yemen was is certainly not more stable. On Syria, I actually liked Trump's foreign policy and by and large leaving it to the Russian's is something I have no problem with. On North Korea, my view is Trump got played - unilaterally promising to stop U.S. military exercises in South Korea while gaining no written agreement or firm concessions in the other direction, all while giving Kim Jong Un the biggest PR display of his life was not a success. With that being said, I'm not against diplomacy but if a Dem had done what Trump did and spoke about 'love letters' with the leader of North Korea conservative heads would have exploded.

The term deep state is such a lazy catch all term to explain away any governments failures, while not providing any specifics for why they didn't do what they promised. If in four years time people are on here blaming the deep state for any of Biden's failures I am sure you will feel the same. In any case if Trump was fooled by 'the deep state', it shows a incompetence on his part.

As for the future it is pure speculation...

My original post was not to say that Trump was some kind of beast on foreign policy, but merely a response to this myth that seems to have been perpetuated that Trump was some kind of break from the military industrial complex. He was a continuation of the American war machine and despite his talk, he put people like Mattis and Bolton into their positions of power. He paid lip service to it rather than do anything, which in my opinion is worst because it sedates people's genuine anger in the delusion that something is being done to curtail the Lockheed Martin's of this world.

Personally I view Trump's tenure as an improvement on foreign policy in terms of reducing direct American involvement in deliberately never ending conflicts.

I don't think you're right to blame Trump for being tricked by the very state that was meant to work for him. A president's time is multi factored and works on trust. Instead I think you should be blaming the dishonesty of the system.

It isn't realistic to think that the state won't fully be behind implementing Biden's policies so I regard the observation that the right should see Biden's future failures as the state working against him as ill fitting.

Look at how the institutions, corporations and media work for Biden.....where is the pushback that Trump had against him? So no, I think you're wrong there.

Also while I'd agree that most of Trump's appointments were terrible I understood what he was trying on foreign policy by placing hawks into defence positions. He wanted to show possible intent with a big stick but also show that he was willing to 'hold them back' as it were....and his opponents appeared to believe it.

However, while Trump had big sticks he started no new wars and now we have Biden in the White House.

I think China and Russia will view him as both compromised and weak.....So I'm concerned about what's ahead.

It will certainly be interesting to see what outlook and policies the party settles on. I'm not sure that I can believe that there could be a dramatic change to the party in the here and now. Maybe 8 years down the line, the old guard will have lost their grip somewhat, but prior possibly a significant third party could apply pressure much as Nigel Farage did. That's why I suspect they have an interest in hobbling Trump even if it hurts them short term, but stopping him hold office. They are not looking to change, even if it is coming.

I agree.

Trump threatening to start a new party could be the best news the Democrats have had in recent times.

It would ensure McConnell did his utmost to get the impeachment confirmed and then Trump barred from holding office again. Who knows what would follow (Don Jnr or Ivanka) but with the head cut off, and muted, the damage of a serious split would diminish. It would still take votes away from the GOP though and ensure they stay out of office for the foreseeable future. The sooner that Trump becomes yesterday's man the safer, happier and less stressed the world will be.

Dignified start by Biden today, with sentiments I thought came over with sincerity. So many problems though that I hope everyone, whatever their politics and personal opinions might be, will wish him luck. He is going to need it.

Well, you're talking about libertarianism there....which is a wing of conservatism, though they also have a small party.

Now I respect libertarianism but any balanced observer can see it's utterly failed as a political movement for two reasons. Firstly the only demographic who really believe in it are Europeans and secondly...and perhaps the far bigger, if related reason.

Individualism never wins against collectivism.
