Just heard about this CLAP FOR HEALTH WORKERS idea.

Surely one pandemic is enough?

Haha.

In regards to this though I'm currently living in Hamburg and at 9pm every night there's a few minutes of applause and cheers for this reason. In these strange times I find it quite a nice, communal and uplifting activity. On Sunday after the applause a kid played his trumpet for the surrounding apartments which was quite sweet (if a little out of tune!).

I think it's happening around different parts of the city and not just the apartment block where I am.

There’s a national doorstep applause tonight at 8pm for NHS staff I think.

I have the upmost respect for all the health workers, not just at the present time. However perhaps this should be done for ALL workers having to carry on eg the poor youngsters on the supermarket tills, many of whom I have seen getting grief, Prison Officers, Border Force Officials etc

Ten minutes later, I received another 'personal' email to say delivery booking slots are available now. Actually, I did nothing about it until I woke up properly around 8.30 then went online at Sainsbury's to have a look. EVERY booking slot for tomorrow (but only tomorrow) was available!!!??? I haven't seen a free slot for weeks. Either it's a miracle or possibly, I've been conned out of week's shopping money. Time will tell.

Probably taken time for slots to become available after the prebooked ones have mostly been done and for Sainsbury’s to set it up on the system. I’m always sniffing how people abuse priority in queues or restriction of items and the first one I thought of is:

Vulnerable customer either over 70 or registered vulnerable customer on Sainsbury’s website via .gov.uk orders loads of stuff for other family or friends in other houses but hopefully pass the stuff on under social distancing advice. Younger family members no doubt order online for their technophobe elders so why wouldn’t they? I suppose if they only get a maximum of one delivery per week there’s not much abuse of it apart from volume which will be down on vans with this new policy.

What sort of grief do supermarket till staff currently get? It’s very civilised around here, hopefully stays that way and tw@ts stay where they are. Plus I do self scan and shop and I’m glad I registered as tills disappeared months ago.

My dear wife and I visited our local Sainsbury's earlier today. There was queueing in the car park but everyone was keeping their distance and the queue moved fairly fast.

At the entrance, employees were allowing customers in once some had left.I estimate that it took us about 8 mins to enter the store from the time we joined the queue. The store was well stocked but of course certain items were off the shelves.

At the checkouts customers were all keeping their distance.I never witnessed any animosity towards staff. All very civilised.
When we exited the store, the queue in the car park was double what it was when we arrived.

Yes, scan one, pocket one. A decent system - you just need those jackets with extra large inside pockets. You can, of course, sew some in yourself.

You're absolutely right and I forgot to mention that the memo that went round here did state that it was to show appreciation for all of those who are working throughout the crisis health workers, teachers, delivery drivers, supermarket workers. I think it's a nice touch.

When it's all done and dusted I think there should be a parade to celebrate their efforts. They deserve the open top bus as much as the FA cup winners.

They have a random check before some payments where the till goes onto a ‘get an assistant’ type message, they scan a random item and it needs to be on your bill. I can’t remember how many they scan or if they scan multiple items of the same product, if they find them.

I got home recently and thought I’d paid for stuff I put back on the shelves but for some reason it has all the scans on the till receipt so that’ll include removed items deducted after you’ve added them to begin with.
