I was on it when flying to Bucharest. It flew to Gatwick empty to pick us up. It was also a very old Ilyushin. Actually rather scary. But isn't it common for planes to be relatively empty on one leg of their flight? As far as I know most return to their home base each night when on short haul.

Was this a commercial airliner or privately chartered?
Certainly not at Gatwick, very rarely do flights come in empty, airlines will utilise any empty space as much as possible. The most common occurence for your scenario is occasionally some airlines will fly from another UK airport to have the plane at Gatwick for holidaymakers, even then, they often bring the aircrew with them.

I will give 3-4 months at least to come to a conclusion on any data analysis from number of infected / deaths perspective. The way numbers are monitored are not structured and consistent yet globally due to various of reasons.

I might be wrong but my understanding is that this is known as a 'Positioning flight'.

In terms of flying into Gatwick from another airport, this situation has occurred when a technical fault on an aircraft at Gatwick has necessitated an aircraft to be flown in from another UK airport to collect the passengers for their outbound flight.

Tarom

Yes, with aircrew. All female shot-putters as far as I could tell

It may have been Heathrow, can't remember

This isn’t a criticism but I expect you might say that the media make this call or an upcoming election (competent opposition that happens to be left wing).

Apart from a few exceptions in SE Asia, Sweden and some loony leaders in Eastern Europe with their theories on how you contract the virus or keep it at bay by going to ice hockey, it looks as though everyone is having a lockdown which we hope is temporary.

You are right, I would say that factors in a good deal.

We have had some good exchanges on the lockdown.....Not that what we think amounts to a hill of beans.

Sportyteacher put forward the idea that as we all have gone down this path....you correctly state we haven't...but most of the west has for him to contend that we could all....kind of write it all off.

As SW said, it might be ok to protect 'too big to fail' bankers but when it comes to the Joe and Jane Bloggs is that really going to fly?

It would sure be nice.....but 'nice' doesn't tend to factor when it comes to money.....seemingly even the MMT 'on the never never' stuff.

However, at some point something has to give.

I think the size of our military is around 275 thousand, of which around 192 thousand are active...compared to way over a million in the NHS...What do we spend on the military...around 2 percent?

Health, as previously stated takes up a massive percentage of our public spending at nearly 20 percent and if you add the pensions in it's nearly 40 percent.

It's a sign of a highly successful society.

However, I think it also reveals why the country has gone down certain paths.

Correct
When aircrew arrive as passengers, having crewed outbound it is bizarrely called "dead-heading!"

One thing that I have been thinking about for a while (well I do have some time on my hands) is the problem may not come down to economy - the problem will come far more suddenly and violently than that.
The problem will be the thin veneer of society that exists in many areas in many countries.
There are whole swathes of people barely paying lip service to the society they are supposed to be part of. There are myriad reasons for this but that isn't the point - I won't go into it. You all know exactly the kind of places/ areas I'm talking about.
Anyway, what about those South London riots for no particular reason? Spread to other areas and there was no virus or shortages.
Look at France. We are not seeing pictures from the streets. Has social unrest and protest stopped? Or is it simmering below the surface? Trouble in Italy and who can blame them?
Well my point is this. Society was not cohesive as it was. This pandemic will exacerbate differences between rich and poor. How long are normal, everyday, middle class folk willing to stay cooped up for? There is a limit there even. Multiply that limit down exponentially for the poorest people. A sense of desperation won't take long. And then watch the trouble - if it isn't covered up.
Perhaps I'm wrong. I just don't think society is anywhere near cohesive enough to deal with any type of 'war'. This one may not even prove to be anywhere near as serious as it is being made out to be. I'm seriously thinking most of our politicians are knee jerk weaklings. But they are sadly representative of much of society today. We will be lucky if we handle this. Not because the situation is that dangerous but because people and their reactions are far more dangerous.
Hopefully, I'm an insane doom mongerer.
