Watch out sw19 will give you telling off about old research. Dont be lazy etc. And for sw19 check back to about 1045 for the relevance of the prescriptions post and dont be lazy.

He can tell me off if he wants.

I always have time for an honest opinion.

You are right, I would say that factors in a good deal.

We have had some good exchanges on the lockdown.....Not that what we think amounts to a hill of beans.

Sportyteacher put forward the idea that as we all have gone down this path....you correctly state we haven't...but most of the west has for him to contend that we could all....kind of write it all off.

As SW said, it might be ok to protect 'too big to fail' bankers but when it comes to the Joe and Jane Bloggs is that really going to fly?

It would sure be nice.....but 'nice' doesn't tend to factor when it comes to money.....seemingly even the MMT 'on the never never' stuff.

However, at some point something has to give.

I answered that by saying the government debt bonds are held by lots of speculators and financial institutions and not necessarily other governments.

You’ll know the consequences of writing off those government debts to this bond holders and with government ability to borrow in the future.

I provided the possibility of longer term government bonds than the 10 year bonds, but the longer the term of the bond, the higher the interest to be repaid by the government. I’m afraid it’s debt debt debt for a long time to come and why I agree the lockdown can’t continue for everyone for too long and there’s already been references to ‘The Marshall Plan’ so the public know what’s on the horizon. Low cost travel being a thing of the past may not be a big concern if people can’t afford it anyway.

I was on it when flying to Bucharest. It flew to Gatwick empty to pick us up. It was also a very old Ilyushin. Actually rather scary. But isn't it common for planes to be relatively empty on one leg of their flight? As far as I know most return to their home base each night when on short haul.

Perhaps we should have a thread on scariest flights encountered. Mine was an internal flight on PIA from Islamabad to Faisalabad, it was a small 4 propellor job. The flight was delayed due to a thunderstorm, my colleague a rather large Welshman requested the seat near an exit. On takeoff all I could hear was "no wonder no b****rd wanted to sit here, the door looks like it is going to fall off!" To cap it all, on all PIA flights before takeoff the broadcast a prayer to Allah.
We drove back

One thing that I have been thinking about for a while (well I do have some time on my hands) is the problem may not come down to economy - the problem will come far more suddenly and violently than that.
The problem will be the thin veneer of society that exists in many areas in many countries.
There are whole swathes of people barely paying lip service to the society they are supposed to be part of. There are myriad reasons for this but that isn't the point - I won't go into it. You all know exactly the kind of places/ areas I'm talking about.
Anyway, what about those South London riots for no particular reason? Spread to other areas and there was no virus or shortages.
Look at France. We are not seeing pictures from the streets. Has social unrest and protest stopped? Or is it simmering below the surface? Trouble in Italy and who can blame them?
Well my point is this. Society was not cohesive as it was. This pandemic will exacerbate differences between rich and poor. How long are normal, everyday, middle class folk willing to stay cooped up for? There is a limit there even. Multiply that limit down exponentially for the poorest people. A sense of desperation won't take long. And then watch the trouble - if it isn't covered up.
Perhaps I'm wrong. I just don't think society is anywhere near cohesive enough to deal with any type of 'war'. This one may not even prove to be anywhere near as serious as it is being made out to be. I'm seriously thinking most of our politicians are knee jerk weaklings. But they are sadly representative of much of society today. We will be lucky if we handle this. Not because the situation is that dangerous but because people and their reactions are far more dangerous.
Hopefully, I'm an insane doom mongerer.

I share your entire perspective.

We have said it all before, and the chickens could well come home to roost over this depending on how events unfold. I've heard that these fears are held within the corridors of power as well.

I have flown PIA from Heathrow many years ago - I believe it was on a 707. I have flown PIA on a Trident on an internal flight.

I've heard PIA referred to jokingly as standing for "Perhaps I'll arrive'
BOAC was 'Better On a camel'

My take on this is that it should work both ways but it doesn’t appear to.

It works both ways if you're not taking sides, yes. And that is the issue. People seem to have 'Sides'

I however, just think it works, not matter what 'side' you lot seem to self-identify as.

True....WW2 made the US much richer and they could afford the 'Marshall Plan'. Like Germany have done with the EU the Marshall Plan also gave the US more reliant trading partners....though obviously it was probably most decided upon avoiding starvation in Europe.....though many died 45-47 from the repercussions of the war....I've heard maybe more than a million Germans.

Failing again I see – pretty sure I wasn't the one that told you off.

Age doesn't matter here, its context and how you're presenting it. And also if that context is presented as though its the latest research.

If research is 100 years old and still the latest most relevant and hasn't been superseded, so what. Fine with me

Exactly my sentiments. Without wishing too down play this too much what resonated with me yesterday was some guy on Twitter yesterday from NYC berating someone in the UK telling him that he'd seen NINE friends/colleagues pass away from Covid19!!!!!
When I happened to mention that I possibly knew as many people as him & that I also lived in NYC & I didn't even know anyone who'd even had a sneeze or a cough let alone die, I didn't hear back from him.
My real issue has been the drip, drip approach to Lock down.Just Lock down completely instead of doing it in dribs & drabs & punish severely those who don't comply so that the rest of us can get on with our lives.
I also happened to notice that a Labour MP deemed it proper to attend a funeral yesterday (with 100s of others)while the rest of us are stuck indoors.
Of course no one will call him out as he's a Muslim & he'll play that card for all it's worth
