Already noticed a lessening in the shrillness today. Saw claims last night that one of Cummings kids might be autistic. Meaning that the issue of childcare, and more importantly who is suitable for that role, becomes a lot more nuanced than normal.

Could be a lot of red-faces this morning.

It's difficult to call without knowing everything, and as a family the Cummings are entitled to some privacy. If their child has special needs, then maybe the options at the time were limited.

The PM hinted at something in his press savaging yesterday but didn't expand on it

An interesting finding. It may nudge the scales towards the idea that immunity to Covid-19 could potentially be long lasting.

And could explain Korea's "success " at combating the virus

My understanding is that 7 Tory MP's have backed sacking Cummings with another 1 retweeting a message. So 8, tops. And of those it is only Steve Baker of any note.

As to the Mail, when Dacre stepped down they became far more anti-Tory and specifically far more pro-remain. Newspapers are doubling down on this because this is potentially the tipping point for the Print Media in its entirety. Up until recently if this many editorials called for a sacking it would have happened. Now? No. Balance of power has been changing for a while now and this could well be the Waterloo.

If the Mirror and the Guardian can come up with a verifiable smoking gun then Cummings is done for. And I was expecting it today. Instead, nothing. These secondary claims are as weak as a super-market value can of bitter. In and of themselves absolutely froth.

With number 10 absolutely definite in terms of their refuting the claims. This time last night I would have put Cummings chances of survival at about 30-70, purely because I could not see why the Mirror and the Guardian would make the claims they did without substantive proof.

And they might still have it but if they have, then today would have been the time to put it out there. Right after that Press Conference which Johnson chose to take. He was not scheduled to do so.

If Cummings is still in post by the end of next week then we have seen a fundamental changing of the goalposts in British politics. It cannot be underestimated. A potentially fatal blow to the traditional print media.

Dont agree your politics but that last point is interesting and potentially dangerous.

If the Mail can't influence a tory government then where is accountability and the fourth estate?

That said I suspect this is more about the size of the majority and the number of years to the next election

I am conflicted on Cummings.

As a remainer I hate him.

As a stirer of the settled order he interests me.

At the core of lockdown policy he has to obey his own rules or face the consequences.

I despair at lockdown and would have done exactly what he did for my family and feck the consequences and anyone's opinion.

As an aside interesting to see those of right persuasion on this site defending him. Wonder if they would have been so supportive had we been talking about Campbell had this happened during the Blair years.

OK, I will then. The idea that Cummings is just cleverer than those people that literally did as they were told is self serving drivel and indicates an underlying I’m all right jack ethos.

So if you don't do as the government tell you here then you're 'self serving' and an 'I'm alright Jack' person.

Interesting.

Have you been writing articles for the Daily Express and Daily Mail by any chance?

Was Cummings at the core of lockdown policy?

It's a genuine question.

He's an adviser at the end of the day and this stuff isn't his brief. I doubt he formed the full lockdown policy.....but I will certainly be interested to find out who pushed for what when the history of all this is laid out.

Cummings reported to the police by witness who claims he saw him break the curfew. Witness is a teacher so just how credible that is remains to bee seen.

So far no smoking gun has been produced and the behaviour of the media pack is disgusting just because they don't like him. Yesterday a lefty told me that he is the most dangerous man in the country and there has never been anyone in that position before.

A load of rubbish of course all leaders have attack dogs Alistair Campbell was well known for threatening reporters and MPs.

Unless any hard evidence emerges this is now a non story.

Cummings is a fascinating individual.

If you go on his website and read his articles you get a sense of just how driven he is, his polymath status and particular interest in superpower politics.

There is his contempt for bureaucratic centralized management systems (a large reason for his anti EU stance) and a contempt for the media and how politics is conducted in general....disliking most actual politicians. In some ways he views right or left as meaningless.

He wants to take a hatchet to the institutions, which he regards as broken and if he gets his way and I have interpreted him correctly, it's going to be fascinating......It is no wonder the entire establishment...even many Tory MPs, want him gone.

But he has some very loyal and powerful backers.

I don't believe that to be the case as the venerable Beeb believe that Cummings is trying to take away their licence fee so they will keep on attacking him until they get rid of him

I am one of those on the right that have defended him on the basis that I would have done exactly the same thing and that in the great scheme of things what he did wasn't worthy of the great media frenzy whipped up by those elements of the media that don't like him.

Would he have had the pack dogs snapping at his heels if he had driven 160 miles or 60 miles or even 10 miles to his parents house and surely those media hyenas that were pushing each other out of the way yesterday were behaving just as badly, but there are no calls to sack the journalists.

It's fairly obvious that as far as the media are concerned deaths in care homes aren't newsworthy any more

Story goes his dad reported him for the visit to his folks place. Cummins knew this would come out so probably asked to be reported to prevent having to admit it after being 'caught'. He also knew that other sightings would be seen if he went out. Clearly these other sightings are a mirage in peoples minds. Maybe the set up was by him by someone who looks like him. If he went out twice or more then he would have fessed up to bojo and would have gone yesterday. Where are the photos as most have a camera on their phone. His son is autistic and depending on severity may only be comfortable with a very limited amount of people. I dont know if autism creates that as not been around it. Still dont think hes silly enough to lie to boris as he would also need canning as well. Left wing rags and a lot of MPs are going to regret knee jerking on this. Cons are in power for 4 years. Glass houses etc is the terminology.
