I honestly think masks were talked down early in the piece for no reason other than there was such a global shortage that no government wanted to put in place a policy that was doomed to fail due to lack of masks.

No one's fault in particular, every country had similar problem early one.Cost of masks became price gouging everywhere.

At the beginning, the scientists in the UK kept asserting that there is little evidence that masks are effective and we were all permitted to enter supermarkets etc without having to wear one.We still had to socially distance in such establishments.

I have a 'Crystal Palace' red and blue mask which I wear with pride!

Do supermarkets drop social distancing rules for mask wearers? Have not heard that and check out lines still have distancing marks on floor as far as I know
but may have changed recently

And then when masks became compulsory supermarkets increased footfall by 200%. Just replaced the best measure of social distancing with masks. Another reason why people won’t do things.

Hello, remember Oz, I mentioned early, no infections no deaths. Attributed to following a state and national guided lockdown and we still wear masks!
Sweden 11 million, Oz 25 million and yes population density has made a difference too.
Sadly because many will not toe the line in UK, lockdown will only reduce the infections and deaths.

Effectively yes, because during lockdown the numbers allowed into stores were controlled and if too busy it was one out, one in. As soon as we came out of the first lockdown and everyone encouraged to wear face coverings (not masks) they allowed unfettered access to the stores. Yes there are markings on the floor but generally speaking social distancing has disappeared as it was originally intended.

What gets me is that if we are led by the science and by the experts in the country, how can they possibly go from a position of, “it provides little or no benefit” to, “it’s the single most important thing to do”, in the space of a couple of months?

Also they have never told us to wear masks, it is face coverings and that is something different. As far as I know that guidance has not changed and yet everyone now refers to masks. The poor guidance and the mixed messages provided by those we are supposed to be relying on has been the only ever present during this pandemic.

I repeat again, Sweden had 10 deaths and we had 595.

Destroyed economies, civil liberties and raised suicides and all other serious conditions for a flu without a vaccine whereas all previous generations took aliments on the chin.

Keep drinking the kool aid.

But you're completely ignoring the point about Swedes largely being respectful of the guidelines and doing what they have been asked to. Even with more stringent measures here people haven't been doing it. If we had followed Sweden's model the death and hospitalisation rate would be even further out of control then it already is.

But you are ignoring the fact that Sweden hasn't been compelled and had to suffer the same unemployment and uprise in serious conditions, suicides and all the rest of it......they are happier as a result.

Plus the fact that compliance has actually been good from most Europeans everywhere. Statistically the issue is more for those you wish to kneel to and others.

I'll add the statement that government has treated the public to civil liberty sanctions more apt for a black death than a bad flu.

Unless you expect marshalls walking round you have an issue of 100 allowed in and then once masks are compulsory only 270 are allowed in. More people means standing in queues at tills longer anyway. I use a self scan gun as I shop so all my stuff is packed and I’m ready to get out almost as soon as I’ve got the last (frozen) item in the bag.
